Locked Admin's Note: Re: I have a new text to speech voice available for purchase. #adminnotice
Nimer Jaber
Hello everyone,
After some discussion and reflection, I am approving the below message to be sent to the list, as Quentin, from NVAccess, has approved the voice to be listed on the wiki. Nonetheless, I have concerns regarding the authenticity of this individual and this voice, and would urge anyone to use caution when purchasing this voice. Always pay using Goods and Services when making a payment on Paypal, not Friends and Family, particularly for this kind of thing, include a description of what you are purchasing, and this way, you should be protected by Paypal's buyer and seller protections. Also, if you happen to purchase this voice, please let us know by writing to nvda+owner@nvda.groups.io of your experience, both good or bad. Ordinarily, voices like this are packaged as add-ons, not as .bat files, and, without purchasing the voice, we don't know what the .bat file will do to your system, if anything, and whether the voice is legit. So please take caution, and please let us know if you have purchased it, of your experience, both good and bad. This may be legitimate, and yet it may not. Nimer Jaber, List Owner |

Hello Nimer,
I too have reservations about buying this voice. The whole thing feels very unserious. I was able to listen to a sample of the voice on the website he posted here. To me it sounds like RHVoice or some similar technology. In such a case I think it is illegal, as these technologies are under an open source license. Best regards Ali |

The voice doesn't sound synthesized. And if it is, why would such a high quality voice be sold for five dollars. The voice sounds much better than voices being sold on the NVDA page for forty dollars, perhaps more.

I am not saying this isn't legitimate, but I'd want good verification. Gene On 3/11/2021 4:10 AM, Ali Savas wrote:

I'll modify what I said. I'm not sure the voice isn't synthesized, but it sounds suspiciously as though it may not be. And the question still remains, why so high quality for a giveaway price?

Hi Gene,
I have a feeling that he wants the money for the voice, but not for the software technology itself, since as I said it seems to be open source. Since we don't know if that's compatible with the license, I'd have a real bellyache buying those voices. Ali |

On the other hand. Author provides 24 hr money back guaranty. Perhaps I would try to get those if in near future will get $5 to spare.

I want a demo, not something I have to purchase, then ask for a
return for if I don't want it. I don't recall ever seeing a voice
being sold that doesn't come with a demo. This is very
nonstandard.

Hi Group,
If this is really legitimate, why wouldn't the author allow for a 7 day trial after which the voice became non functional? Be ware of this software. On 3/11/2021 7:13 AM, Bogdan Onyshenko

It requires more coding efford. Plus there is always a possibility that software will be cracked.

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds synthetic to me. I don't have enough money to purchase that at the moment, but maybe in the future I will. In which engine did you or the developer created the voice from? I'm just kind of curious. Ron Canazzi wrote:

This is weird. Voices for NVDA should packaged as NVDA add-on. The .bat file always needs to run as administrator permission, be cautious what you use here. On Thu, Mar 11, 2021, 8:06 PM Ian Blackburn <ianblackburn@...> wrote:

I wonder what is in this bat file. Since it is binary, if anyone will get it he/she could read it using notepad for example.

Hi,
I personally don't assume now that the seller wants to offer us some malware or something like that. The batch file will be for registering the voices for SAPI 5. I am more bothered by the procedure and the way this software is offered. To me it sounds very much like RHVoice or a similar technology like MaryTTS. Ali |

Well I will buy this when I get home but yeah, Not sure because of the .bat file, but depending on what it does later on I may try to see if the author should try to use innosetup. Currently on holiday so no doodling with buying on semi public hotel networks but if this is lagit and loads to where it needs to go, depending on how complex it is, I may try to make an innosetup package, could do as a good podcast, and then give that to the author or tell them how to use innosetup as I have used this with a lot of things. From listening on google drive this is certainly something I'd like but right now I am away from my backups and working on a semi public hotel network so I am not doing any shopping or banking or anything

I haven't looked at a .bat file since the MS DOS days, but isn't it just a text file you can examine in Notepad or similar?
Wouldn't that quickly determine if it is in any way malicious? |

Just to be clear, I did add the voice (at the creators request) to the Extra Voices page, which is part of the Wiki which others could edit as well: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/ExtraVoices In adding it, I was just sharing the resource on the appropriate page, not explicitly endorsing it. My initial feeling was this was made by a young creator just getting started. Certainly I think we'd all appreciate a review on the voice by anyone who does purchase it (both to allay the fears of those concerned, and just because we all like to know what a new voice is like). The difference is you do not open them for editing by activating them, which causes them to run. You select, bring up the context menu, and choose Edit from the context menu. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 Any idiot can face a crisis. I don't think voices should be added without review, at least when they are unknown. If you list a voice, it has the implied endorsement of NVDA developers just because it is on a trusted site.
