NVDA 2021.1 beta and Code Factory Voices

Don H

So is the fact that the beta won't work with the Code Factory voices a temporary thing or is it bbroke until Code Factory updates their voices?

I have retitled this topic to be very specific for archival purposes and so it's abundantly clear exactly what it's about.

Folks, a request that's really critical now:  Please make your topic titles as descriptive and specific as possible.  During the beta periods this is even more important than it is generally, and it is important generally.

Sorry that I can't speak to the actual question.

I do not understand why some seek to separate a person from their actions.  The self is composed of an individual’s thoughts, actions, and expression, which are contained in and actuated by the body.  What you do and say is the clearest indicator of who you are.

Hi,
It is really up to Code Factory to do something about their add-on, as it is highly unlikely that changes can be made to NVDA to resolve issues at this time (once API is frozen, the chance of it being reverted is small unless really critical issues arise that affects NVDA itself).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,

To reiterate an earlier answer: it is really up to Code Factory to do something about their add-on – the add-ons community was told about critical things that can break add-ons, and one of these affects speech synthesizer add-ons.

Cheers,

Joseph

I've sent an email to CodeFactory and I'll let you know what I find out.

Which is why I spent the extra cash on sapi synths.

I know addons are probably a bit better but this is the big issue with changing nvda versions.

Which sapi synth do people recommend that is intelligible at high speeds?

I tried Microsoft David from the Windows 1 Core voices, and beyond a certain speed, the ends of words are quieted.

I'm not looking for as human-sounding as possible. I'm looking for intelligible and responsive when fast.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Chris, wishing someone could somehow write a software emulation of the old Accent synth. LOL

My strong view is that Eloquence combines being more pleasant to listen to than other synthesizers at high speeds and being more easily intelligible at high speeds.  I haven’t tried enough of the newer synthesizers to say that no others are, but of the few I’ve heard, none equal Eloquence.  The Eloquence voice isn’t as pleasant sounding as the newer synthesizers generally are, but it doesn’t have unnatural pauses and inflections and it also pronounces more words correctly out of the box than other synthesizers I’ve heard.

You can see if you agree.  A demo is available of a SAPI version of Eloquence.  One place you can read about it and get it is here:

There is a link that says something like click here to download a seven day demo and the page has information about the product.

Thanks Gene.

I will definitely be trying this, as I am used to Eloquence.

Chris, Eloquence all the way! However, IMO, there's really no need to pay for the SAPI version as it's relatively limited in some ways. I suggest the following feature-rich and up-to-date free add-on: https://github.com/ultrasound1372/NVDA-IBMTTS-Driver
If you add the required library to it (I mean the stuff which can't ship with the add-on), you'll have an awesome-sounding Eloquence/IBMTTS engine for NVDA. Then combine it with the following and no engine can match its unrivaled pronunciations: https://github.com/thunderdrop/IBMTTSDictionaries

Best,
Amir

Thanks Amir.

Hehehe. I was aware of the cracked version, but did not know it had already been updated to work with the latest NVDA beta!

Where do i find that library you mention below, and how do I go about putting the pieces together? I hope this is as simple as putting the necessary files in the same folder. (grin)

thanks again,

Chris

the link has the name IBM in it.  That makes me suspicious that this is Via Voice, not Eloquence.  Via Voice sounds like Eloquence and, in my experience, is indistinguishable in sound and performance to Eloquence.  But to keep things accurate, Via Voice was developed by IBM and Eloquence wasn’t.

It has the name IBM in it but depending on the library used, it can sound like Eloquence or like IBMTTS. There are minor differences between the two, but, like you, I prefer Eloquence and am using the Eloquence library as opposed to the IBMTTS library myself.
Cheers.

On this ;page, how do you know what you are looking for, a downloadable version that can be run as it is.  I imagine it is on the site but I am not familiar with how things are stated and organized on such pages.

Also, since this page seems to be for the driver, whered do you find whatever else is necessary?

You are welcome, Chris.
The add-on itself is perfectly legal as it doesn't ship with the required library or libraries. Adding the required files doesn't entail any cracking whatsoever. In fact, if you happen to use JAWS or the SAPI 4 release of Eloquence which ships with the Kurzweil 1000, you already have the needed files. However, the following add-on does indeed ship the required library, eliminating the need to make further modifications. Just check here: https://github.com/pumper42nickel/eloquence_threshold

Gene

I have never heard any differences between the two and I’ve used both extensively.

Whatever the case, of course, people may try whichever they want.

Sorry, but IBM ViaVoice and Eloquence were both developed by Eloquent Technology Inc, there the ETI...

Later Eloquent Technology becomes SpeechWorks Technology and lately Nuance...

Does the beta also break the stand alone vocalizer package from Code Factory?

Amir

Well, the Read Me section sort of explains it. But the IBMTTS/ViaVoice-related library makes the engine a bit more accurate with pronunciations. At the same time, it has a couple of issues with certain punctuation marks. So, all in all, I prefer the Eloquence library a version of which I also posted.

Best,
Amir
