Compatibility of EnhancedPhoneticReading AddOn?

Gerardo Corripio

2 questions
1.-what’s the name of the addOn that when you put yourself on the letter with the arrows, after waiting a few seconds, it’ll tel you for example P Papa b bravo etc?
And 2.-Is this AddOn compatible yet with NVDA21.1? And if so I can’t seem to find it on the official AddOns page updated.

You are thinking of one of David CM's add-ons, EnhancedPhoneticReading.

His main GitHub page is:  https://github.com/davidacm and all of his add-ons can be found there.  His email address is:  dhf360@...

The last version of this was released in 2019, so it's not at all likely to be compatible with NVDA 2021.1, though it might be very, very easy for the developer to make it so.

I would contact him about this.

As it happens, Rui Fontes posted a link to his own mod of this add-on to make it 2021.1 compatible during the alpha/beta period of 2021.1.  You should still contact the actual developer of the original add-on.

NVDA has been able to do this natively, but not particularly easily if you're dealing with a lot of characters in succession.  But if it's a very occasional need, you may not even require the add-on.

Rui, thanks much for the updated link and for doing the mod.  Let's hope the original gets an "official update" from its developer.

Hi Group,

I installed the modified and updated add on for this feature and it works great. In my old age, my hearing isn't so good and with this phonetics when moving by character, it really helps a lot.  In addition, I think I am going to post this to the Blind Hams list as a nice add on for NVDA  and reading amateur radio call signs (assuming I didn't get kicked off for being too uppity--there has been some intrigue there in the past few days and I haven't gotten any posts.)

Rui,

I, too, would sincerely like to thank you for taking the time to update this addon. While there are ways of quickly obtaining the phonetic equivalent of a character using the number pad this automatic feature is a capability that I’ve grown accustomed to with JAWS and is one that I’ve always wanted to see in NVDA. Having this, while a small change to some, makes using NVDA even more enjoyable for me. Thank you.

I'm reviving this topic for one reason only, this particular add-on is, from all appearances, entirely "home grown" as it does not appear on the Community Add-Ons page nor on the Add-Ons Compatibility Page (which includes some non-official add-ons as well).

Rui Fontes has provided a modification for compatibility with NVDA 2021.1 here:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/q75mnyttr34zjpm/EnhancedPhoneticReading_0.5a2_Gen.nvda-addon?dl=1

Anyone who might happen to know how to contact the original developer of this add-on should do so to determine whether he or she is still maintaining it, and whether he or she has any intention of doing an update to the original source for compatibility with NVDA 2021.1.  I have no idea who created or is maintaining this add-on, but responsibility for ongoing maintenance falls to them or their successor(s).

I emailed the developer several weeks ago to ask for it to be updated  in the then upcoming NVDA release but got no response at all so I suspect it has actually been abandoned.

As you say we were lucky that Rui Fontes stepped into the breach to update it.

As it essential for Hearing impaired users of NVDA like myself I strongly believe this is a case where this functionality should be incorporated into the core of NVDA to assist deaf blind users to prevent vulnerability to breakage in the future.

David,

If you don't have a GitHub account this is the perfect example of why having one is handy.  There already exists an open issue:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8822

that you could add a comment to that deals with phonetic character reading.  The capability already exists in the NVDA core, but the request was for settings to be implemented that allowed it to "remain on" until you turned it off rather than having to go through the key sequence for each and every character.

I see also that EnhancedPhoneticReading is noted as being one of Tony Malykh's add-ons, and he's still around as far as I know.  On the add-ons compatibility page his email address is given as anton.malykh@....

But if you would like to see this functionality in the NVDA core the best place you can voice that is on GitHub.
