Issues with number presentation and beeps

Nancy Shackelford

Is there another setting regarding NVDA sounds such as the beeps for
progress or forms mode? They stayed in the Windows audio instead of my
other headphones when I changed the output location of the
synthesizer. Is there a place to set how numbers are spoken, such as
getting the "and" out of the speech? Cannot find these in settings.
Thanks,
Nance

There is no NVDA setting to do this.  If it can be done, it is a windows setting related to sounds being played through the soundcard you like.  These NVDA sounds are wave files and I don’t know if you can tell windows to play wave sounds through a specific device.  And that would affect things such as wave files in general, if you listen to audio in the form of wave files such as music you have digitized in the wave format and you will hear Windows sounds through the same place as your synthesizer.

I was afraid of this...  Now, what about my issues with the way numbers are spoken, as in my most recent message?
Thanks again,

it’s the speech synthesizer that determines whether and is spoken.  NVDA doesn’t insert it.

Others may have the knowledge to discuss if there is a way to eliminate it when a synthesizer inserts it by using a regular expression in the NVDA speech dictionary.

I had thought the NVDA speecch dictionary might solve this problem.  That may not be the case according to a very little bit of experimentation I’ve done.  You may have to use the speech dictionary in the synthesizer itself.

If you don’t mind using another synthesizer when you are listening to text containing a lot of large numbers, the easiest thing to do would be to use a different synthesizer for that time.

Eloquence doesn’t insert and.  I don’t know what other synthesizers don’t

Okay, I was wondering about this as well.

Hi Nancy

You can set NVDA to speak the mode instead of using audio queues when it is changed.  Uncheck “Audio indication of Browse modes” in the Browsing settings dialog (NVDA+Control+b).  There are also various options for progress bar feedback available in the Object Settings dialog (NVDA+Control+o).  Unless there is an addon for number processing I don’t know of any NVDA setting to alter how numbers are spoken.

Cheers

Chris

Please, can you remember what is the problem with numbers and the synth in use?

The problem with the numbers is that it puts the word "and" in the
numbers, such as "six hundred and sixty five."

You might get help working with the specific synthesizer if you say which one you are using.  This may require some sort of change in the synthesizer functioning itself, such as working with the dictionary for that synthesizer or changing some setting somehow in the synthesizer settings, not any part of NVDA.

I'm getting the picture now, and the synthesizer is Microsoft Speech
API version 5.

And do you want it to say:

six six five?

6 6 5 or 6 hundred 65, just without the and.

6 6 5 is possible with an add-on:

I would, but my choices are quite limited, and I definitely can't
understand even the English voice for E speak, so I'll figure
something out. Was trying to wait till the 3rd to get the 95-dollar
Elloquence. Think I'll take Chris's suggestion to address the sounds
problem and to be better able to tell when it's in which mode by
setting it to use speech for this.
Thanks,

Regarding Eloquence, I would say to try the demo if you plan to buy it.  It would be a good idea to make sure numbers are read as you wish and that the product performs in general as you wish.  It probably will but its best to make sure.   I expect you would do this.  I’m just stating it so I’ve made the suggestion and I won’t feel as though I’ve left something out.

Nancy,

Can you give some specific examples of various numbers and how you would like for each to be read?

As others have noted, how numbers get read is very much dependent on the synthesizer in use.  But, you can also play a lot of useful tricks with the dictionary (or dictionaries) on an as-needed basis for some constrained set of numbers (as in if it's no greater than ten thousand) with regular expressions that would allow you to parse a given number that is two through five digits into its component digits when reading it.  It's just impossible to do for something "of unknown, generic length."  There would also be the issue of whether you want the same for numbers with decimal points, which is another thing that can be done.
