Hi guys
Has any one had the following problem using outlook? when after inserting a emoji when you go to read back what you have typed in the email it says 12 instead of the name of the emoji.
They are using windows 10 not sure which version yet and to make sure I am going to get her to update nvda she might already have I will find out shortly.
The below is what she said and I have no answer about saying emoji before it.
But, weirdly, when I select them and read back over that spot it just says 12 where each one is. Then if I send the e-mail and someone replies I can read them if I scroll down to my original e-mail. Emojis from other people are reading fine.
Is this a setting I need to change in NVDA or is it something to do with my rather outdated 2013 version of outlook. And can I set NVDA to say emoji when it reads one so I know it isn’t part of the text if it is a bit random. _._,_._,_
So it seems she can read emojis in a email but not after it has been inserted into her email that she types up.
Any ideas?

Hi guys
It looks as though if you have the following setting under speech unchecked called Include Unicode Consortium data (including emoji) when processing characters and symbols it looks as though when the emoji panel is brought up it only speaks the number of the emoji not the name and when checked will speak the emojis names one for the trouble shooting section.
I am just waiting for the person to get back to me to see if that fixes the problem it worked in notepad so can not see why not for outlook.

Hello Gene, I also have the problem. I just unchecked the checkbox in the speech parameters and pressing ☹ an emoji does not change anything. NVDA says 1 in Outlook. Best Sylvie

I have for about a year now on one of my computers, but not figured out how to fix it. I thought it was just something I had accidentally changed.

On the voice settings page (NVDA+control+v) you want to enable "Include Unicode Consortium data (including emoji) when processing characters and symbols"
"When this checkbox is checked, NVDA will include additional symbol pronunciation dictionaries when pronouncing characters and symbols. These dictionaries contain descriptions for symbols (particularly emoji) that are provided by the Unicode Consortium as part of their Common Locale Data Repository. If you want NVDA to speak descriptions of emoji characters based on this data, you should enable this option. However, if you are using a speech synthesizer that supports speaking emoji descriptions natively, you may wish to turn this off. Note that manually added or edited character descriptions are saved as part of your user settings. Therefore, if you change the description of a particular emoji, your custom description will be spoken for that emoji regardless of whether this option is enabled. You can add, edit or remove symbol descriptions in NVDA's punctuation/symbol pronunciation dialog. To toggle Unicode Consortium data inclusion from anywhere, please assign a custom gesture using the Input Gestures dialog."

Hi Quentin
The lady I have been talking to via email say what happens goes
like this.
she goes into outlook and does a new email. In the body of the
email she will type up some stuff. If then she uses the Windows
key + . to bring up the emoji panel when she arrows around the
emojis are spoken out correctly She presses the enter key on the
one she wants it is then inserted into the email. Then she will
press the escape key to close the panel So if she types more and
then adds more text and emojis it is not until it is when she
goes to review the email it says 12 in place of the emoji.
So the example would be I saw a emoji police car today and a fire
emoji engine down the street.
The word emoji is not spoken out but it was more to let you know
it was in the email.
so when she goes to read it back with the arrow keys she gets the
following in the email.
So the example would be I saw a 12today and 12down the street.
She is using Windows 10 and nvda 2021.2. I think she said it also
happened in word when she went to review the document where she
had inserted them.
Those settings were checked you gave. I have told her what to do
about setting to debug level recreating the problem in the program
and sending me back the log so I can do a ticket.
She said when some one sends her a email with emojis in it they
are spoken out correctly but not in the part where you type stuff
inserting a emoji then reading back the email to send it that is
where the problem is. She does not have a braille display she is
hearing it.
Apparently I have seen 2 or 3 others on the list with the same
problem in the thread.

Ah I just explored a bit more - I am using NVDA 2021.2 Windows 10 (64-bit) Version: 2009, Build: 19043 Office 365 (64-bit) Version: 16.0.14326.20384
This happens at least on my pc when I have NVDA set NOT to use UI Automation in Word. If you go into NVDA's advanced controls and check that option:
1. Press NVDA+control+g to open options 2. Press CONTROL+SHIFT+TAB to the "Advanced" category. 3. Press spacebar to acknowledge the "I understand...." warning. 4. Press TAB until the focus is on "Use UI Automation to access Microsoft Word Document Controls". 5. Press SPACEBAR to check this. 6. Press ENTER. Now emoji's should be read correctly.

Hi Quentin
I will pass on the information you gave me to her and see what
happens.
I will see if it does the job in word and do you know if it will
do it for outlook as well. I just looked in the advanced settings
saw it for word but not outlook as well does that use word code?
I also saw it for some others.
If things work correctly should I tell her to save her settings.
Any other info to pass on?
Any problems for me to note.
She might take a couple of days to get back to me.
If the problems are fixed should i then not do a ticket? or let
her try it for a week or so before we go any further.

Outlook essentially treats emails like Word documents, so yes that setting applies to both Word and to emails in Outlook.
I'm not sure which version of Office she has, I think for newer builds, using UIA fixes a number of issues we can't otherwise address and will soon be the default.
Kind regards

text if it is a
bit random.

Hi Quentin
I got the following back from her last night and have asked her
to try it in the next few days. It sounds like it done the trick.
Her reply is below.
Wahoo Gene you are a miracle worker!
I just thought after getting those emojis working that I should
open a word document and test out my music symbols.
And guess what, they all read now!!!
This is huge as it means I can use the rhythm symbols plus letters
to create my own music short hand to write out info from kids
workbooks that have otherwise been completely inaccessible.
Thank you so much for your help.
Well, have done that, so let’s test it.
Here comes an emoji
👍
Well I chose the above emoji in faith that it had worked and it
now reads thumbs up!
Wahoo, pass my thanks on to Quinton.
I am thinking this one is done in outlook?
Should I still get her other info or just leave it as it sounds
like the problem is fixed I will know more in the next few days.

Outlook essentially treats emails like Word
documents, so yes that setting applies to both Word and to
emails in Outlook.
I'm not sure which version of Office she has, I think for
newer builds, using UIA fixes a number of issues we can't
otherwise address and will soon be the default.
Kind regards
Quentin.
Hi Quentin
I will pass on the information you gave me to her and see
what happens.
I will see if it does the job in word and do you know if
it will do it for outlook as well. I just looked in the
advanced settings saw it for word but not outlook as well
does that use word code? I also saw it for some others.
If things work correctly should I tell her to save her
settings.
Any other info to pass on?
Any problems for me to note.
She might take a couple of days to get back to me.
If the problems are fixed should i then not do a ticket?
or let her try it for a week or so before we go any
further.

Ah I just explored a bit more - I am using
NVDA 2021.2
Windows 10 (64-bit) Version: 2009, Build: 19043
Office 365 (64-bit) Version: 16.0.14326.20384
This happens at least on my pc when I have NVDA set
NOT to use UI Automation in Word. If you go into
NVDA's advanced controls and check that option:
1. Press NVDA+control+g to open options
2. Press CONTROL+SHIFT+TAB to the "Advanced"
category.
3. Press spacebar to acknowledge the "I
understand...." warning.
4. Press TAB until the focus is on "Use UI
Automation to access Microsoft Word Document
Controls".
5. Press SPACEBAR to check this.
6. Press ENTER.
Now emoji's should be read correctly.

Hi Quentin
The lady I have been talking to via email say
what happens goes like this.
she goes into outlook and does a new email. In
the body of the email she will type up some stuff.
If then she uses the Windows key + . to bring up
the emoji panel when she arrows around the emojis
are spoken out correctly She presses the enter key
on the one she wants it is then inserted into the
email. Then she will press the escape key to close
the panel So if she types more and then adds more
text and emojis it is not until it is when she
goes to review the email it says 12 in place of
the emoji.
So the example would be I saw a emoji police car
today and a fire emoji engine down the street.
The word emoji is not spoken out but it was more
to let you know it was in the email.
so when she goes to read it back with the arrow
keys she gets the following in the email.
So the example would be I saw a 12today and
12down the street.
She is using Windows 10 and nvda 2021.2. I think
she said it also happened in word when she went to
review the document where she had inserted them.
Those settings were checked you gave. I have told
her what to do about setting to debug level
recreating the problem in the program and sending
me back the log so I can do a ticket.
She said when some one sends her a email with
emojis in it they are spoken out correctly but not
in the part where you type stuff inserting a emoji
then reading back the email to send it that is
where the problem is. She does not have a braille
display she is hearing it.
Apparently I have seen 2 or 3 others on the list
with the same problem in the thread.

descriptions for symbols (particularly emoji)

If you want NVDA to speak descriptions of

should enable this option. However, if you are
using a speech synthesizer that supports
speaking emoji descriptions natively, you may
wish to turn this off.
Note that manually added or edited character

You can add, edit or remove symbol descriptions

Hi guys
Has any one had the following problem using
outlook? when after
inserting a emoji when you go to read back
what you have typed in the
email it says 12 instead of the name of the
emoji.
They are using windows 10 not sure which
version yet and to make sure I
am going to get her to update nvda she might
already have I will find
out shortly.
The below is what she said and I have no
answer about saying emoji
before it.
But, weirdly, when I select them and read back
over that spot it just
says 12 where each one is. Then if I send the
e-mail and someone
replies I can read them if I scroll down to my
original e-mail. Emojis
from other people are reading fine.
Is this a setting I need to change in NVDA or
is it something to do with
my rather outdated 2013 version of outlook.
And can I set NVDA to say
emoji when it reads one so I know it isn’t
part of the text if it is a
bit random.
