Accessing Zoom Chat With NVDA

Louis Maher

Hello,

Is it possible to copy and paste a chat message in a Zoom meeting using NVDA? I serve as a scribe for several groups, and I am going to convert to NVDA due to JAWS no longer supporting the “who is talking” global command “control + 2”. JAWS stopped supporting this command about three weeks ago. The “who is talking” command is useful for scribes only if it is global so that the scribe can stay in their notes and not switch to the Zoom meeting to activate a local “who is talking” command.  I have complained to Vispero about this.

Hi

You can use

Control + Shift + T for JAWS to announce name of active speaker. with JAWS 2021.

As for copying chat in NVDA,  you can use "speech history,  review and opying" add-on.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Thank you.  Unfortunately control + shift + t is not a global command.  That is, you can’t use it from the minutes file.  You must alt + tab to Zoom, control + shift + t, then alt + t back to your minutes file.

Thank you for the info of the JAWS hotkey and its limitation. The fact is that I seldom use JAWS these days. NVDA is my main screen reader.

Are you using the Zoom enhancer add-on? I find it very useful too.

You can use NVDA + Ctrl + h To open a dialog where you can read all the chats.  Thanks.

Can you then copy the chat history from the chat window with the nvda zoom add on? I often do not do this, as I have a transcript auto save when I exit th emeeting.

JAWS may have let you use this command as though it were a universal command but that may have been a JAWS feature.  I joined a test meeting and when I talked, if I was in the window using NVDA, the command control 2 worked.  When I talked and I wasn’t in the window, it didn’t.

Also, if this feature no longer exists in the newest version of JAWS, you can install an earlier version. and keep the newer version.  You can have multiple copies of JAWS on the same machine.  You can use the older copy only for Zoom meetings, if you wish.

Of course, you may want to see if NVDA does what you want before installing an earlier JAWS version.
