Kristoffer Gustafsson
Hi.
I've got a scanner. I know that jaws has ocr functions if I want to scan a document, but I just nvda. What can I use instead? I know about omni page but that costs a lot of money. -- Kristoffer Gustafsson Salängsgatan 7a tel:033-12 60 93 mobil: 0730-500934 |

Do you have Word? As I recall, it has its own OCR program. There
are free OCR programs but I won't comment on them now. I haven't
used them but others may have.

Hi Gene,
Are you referring to m s word?
If so, in what part of the menu ribbons is it found?

https://www.lifewire.com/ocr-software-you-may-have-2769249 I don't know how accurate it is. When I tried it a long time ago in Word 2003, it wasn't as accurate as Openbook or Kurzweil. That may not mean anything today. Gene On 4/2/2022 6:04 AM, Gene wrote: Do you have Word? As I recall, it has its own OCR program. There are free OCR programs but I won't comment on them now. An internet search for something like best free OCR will show
relevant results. Here is one page. It discusses what the writer
thinks are twelve good free OCR programs. I haven't used any of
them and I don't take a position on any of them nor on the
reliability of the information and opinions. But it gives you a lot
of programs to try and brief reviews.

I have an HP Envy Pro 6400 all-in-one. Using the scanner, saving the image; then switch to the folder where the image was saved and using the NVDA OCR function to read it. It has done quite well indentifying my mail and even sometimes reading it.

Try the OCRNow add on, I don't have a link to it but a search on the groups.io website should help you out or google OCRNow nvda add on.

I don't think that add-on works with a scanner. As far as I know,
it works with existing documents, such as PDF files, that are
already on the system.

I just checked the help information and that is correct. It scans documents on the system or on a drive connected to the system.

I should clarify and say that I don't know if it works on, for example, a web page that is an image of text or a document that opens as an image in a browser.

Hi It has to be done in a 2 step process, first use the scanner software to obtain an image file, then use the NAO add-on for NVDA to open and recognise the image file. Check the Help information of the NAO add-on to find out what types of image file can be recognised and set the scanner software accordingly.
Cheers Chris

That's what I'm saying: After I scan a page and save it, it does exist on the computer "documents" folder. Thence, I OCR it with the NVDA add-on.

Actually they are trying to make it work with scanners in the future, if I remember correctly. If they are still around, the can chime in.

Well, many scaners has an option to save as PDF. Also, if that
strangely is not available in the scaner interphase you can scan
to images, paste these in word (or a program that supports that)
and save the file to PDF format. El 02/04/2022 a las 12:16, Gene

That makes sense but it sounds very cumbersome for any but a small
amount of pages.

Hi I use a 20 year old Epson Perfection 1650 with the Kurzweil scan software and that uses a 2 step process, scan and recognise, albeit integrated.

A long time ago, Epson Perfection scanners had a good accessible OCR
program. It was a version of Fine Reader. But at some point, they
switched to an inaccessible one.

I don't know anything about how scanner software scans to PDF documents. Could you scan a book and have all the pages accumulate in one PDF file? Gene On 4/2/2022 2:08 PM, Chris Mullins
