Hi NVDA folks that use NotePad++ I discovered that Notepad++ 8.3.3 crashes with NVDA. I use NPPcrypt, and had to have my son decrypt the files for me. What are people doing while this incompatibility gets fixed? I would discourage people going to version 8.3.x at this time. Can one just install 8.2.x over 8.3, or would this break plugins? This also taught me a lesson about encrypting files and being careful not to depend on that software always working. Which version of NVDA are you using?
What are the steps to reproduce the problem?
What exactly happens once the problem occurs? Saying that NVDA crashes isn’t necessarily as specific as you might think.
Are you using any NVDA addons?
Does the problem occur when all addons are disabled?

The what's new of NVDA 2022.1 beta says:
• NVDA no longer causes 64-bit versions of Notepad++ 8.3 and above to crash. (#13311)
So it should be fixed in the next release and is already in the current beta. I have not tested myself however.

I am using NotePad++ 64-bit in Windows 11 with last Alpha of NVDA
and NotePad++ opens without any problem...
And, by the way, have you tested without NPPcryt?

It’s a bit late for that. Mine crashes with a 2000 character markdown set pasted from the clipboard. I thought I was the only one having the problem. This will not answer your question, but this at least gives me another shoulder to cry on. lol!

Hi Group,
On another list, this question was asked. Apparently there is some
sort of issue specifically with the 64 bit version of Notepad Plus
plus and NVDA. Supposedly it is fixed for next full release.
However, I see no real advantage of the 64 bit over the 32 bit. I
did n fact confirm the issue when for testing purposes, I did a
complete uninstall of the 32 bit and installed the 64 bit version.
To remedy this, I then uninstalled the 64 bit version and installed
the older version 8.29 and then used what is apparently a combined
version of the 8.33 installer, it detected the 32 bit version,
installed a 32 bit version and the problem is solved for now.
if anyone can tell me the benefits of the 64 bit over the 32 bit
version, I would be interested in the information.

I saw on a list, I don't remember which one, that if you run the
beta, the problem is solved. But I see no point in the 64bit
version. What benefit is their in having a 64 bit text editor? 64
bit programs can handle large amounts of data more quickly and there
are certain programs that benefit but a lot don't. I've read that
one kind of program that benefits is a data-base program.

Hi, I am running now the 2022.1 beta 2 in continuous, not installed. Notepadd++ continues to crash. I do have NPPCrypt installed. I find it to be a reail pain to install and remove plugins. The interface is difficult to use. Best George

It might be NPPCrypt which is conflicting perhaps?
Using NVDA 2022.1 Beta 3 and Notepad++ 8.3.3 seems to work fine for me without any add-ons in either program. Do you mean the interface for add-ons in NVDA is difficult, or Notepad++? I must admit I haven't really looked at the add-on interface in Notepad++, but just to make sure you know in NVDA, if you want to disable add-ons to see if that helps a problem, you can press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and press enter, to restart NVDA without add-ons. The following time you start NVDA, it will prompt to re-enable add-ons.

Ok, a hard to navigate interface is not the same as a crash though.
Ok I had a look and when you go to the "plugins admin" screen in Notepad++, you can tab between a number of controls, but not the most important one, the list of plugins.
So to get to that list, open the dialog, and then press: - Next object (NVDA+numpad 6 in desktop layout or NVDA+shift+right arrow in laptop layout) until you get to the "list". - Move system focus to review position (NVDA+shift+numpad minus in desktop layout or NVDA+shift+backspace in laptop keyboard layout).
Once you have the focus on the plugin list, you can use the up and down arrow keys to move between options, and spacebar to select or deselect options - to install a plugin, select it then tab to the "install" button. You can also tab to a pane with a description about the current plugin, although you'll need to use the steps above to get back to the list of plugins if you aren't finished after that.

I must admit I haven't really looked at the add-on interface in Notepad++, but just to make sure you know in NVDA, if you want to disable add-ons to see if that helps a problem, you can press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and press enter, to restart NVDA without add-ons. The following time you start NVDA, it will prompt to re-enable add-ons. Best George I saw on a list, I don't remember which one, that if you run the beta, the problem is solved. But I see no point in the 64bit version. What benefit is their in having a 64 bit text editor? 64 bit programs can handle large amounts of data more quickly and there are certain programs that benefit but a lot don't. I've read that one kind of program that benefits is a data-base program.

However, I see no real advantage of the 64 bit over the 32 bit. I did n fact confirm the issue when for testing purposes, I did a complete uninstall of the 32 bit and installed the 64 bit version. To remedy this, I then uninstalled the 64 bit version and installed the older version 8.29 and then used what is apparently a combined version of the 8.33 installer, it detected the 32 bit version, installed a 32 bit version and the problem is solved for now.

What exactly happens once the problem occurs? Saying that NVDA crashes isn’t necessarily as specific as you might think. Are you using any NVDA addons? Does the problem occur when all addons are disabled? Hi NVDA folks that use NotePad++ I discovered that Notepad++ 8.3.3 crashes with NVDA. I use NPPcrypt, and had to have my son decrypt the files for me. What are people doing while this incompatibility gets fixed? I would discourage people going to version 8.3.x at this time. Can one just install 8.2.x over 8.3, or would this break plugins? This also taught me a lesson about encrypting files and being careful not to depend on that software always working. Best George
