Are there free and legal speech synthesizer add-ons for NVDA?

Greetings,

I'm fairly new to the list and to anything that is not the most basic structure in NVDA. My question: Where can I find free speech synthesizer add-ons for NVDA? I searched the add-on site but didn't see this particular category listed.

Thanks so much.

Hi, Kim,

I think there are extra voices for older versions of NVDA. Do a search for extra voices for NVDA on either google or any other search engine you use.

Hope this helps.

hi, Rose,
can you list some of then

Years ago there were a few free addons to add extra voices to NVDA. However, as NVDA evolved and became incompatible with older addons those addons never updated their software. ESpeak may be one of the last, no-cost synthesizers and is still one that I fall back to. Of course, you have Microsoft's voices which have improved and have become more responsive.

Hi,

The only voice I can think of right off-hand is the RH voice. I know there are more but I'll have to do another search for them. They're for older versions of NVDA though.

I won't say much about it, as I honestly don't know if it was legal or not, so before a mod bites off my head for discussing illegal software on here, realize that I'm not sure if it was or not. If I'm told it was illegal, I'll abruptly and immediately cease this discussion further, I absolutely cross my heart no questions asked.

That said, what about that old addon for DecTalk Access 32. I wonder if anyone's managed to get it working.

I have it, but the version I have doesn't seem to be compatible anymore, so not sure if it was ever updated. If I'm told it was illegal, you have my word to immediately delete the file.

A Web search turned up the following page for what looks like a modern RH Voice addon which is still being developed by the community.
https://rhvoice.org/
I haven't installed it but the main addon did launch the installer with my beta version of 2022.1 without an error.

Udit,

What you have just done is an attempt to hijack a topic, which violates longstanding netiquette and which I will not tolerate.  Do not do so again.

Those who are members here are also not necessarily members of the Chat Subgroup.  Those who have an interest in that venue see what's posted there and will reply if they can.  You need to understand that not all queries will get an answer.

There aren't many free synthesizers that are compatible with the current version of NVDA.  There are a few more listed that are compatible with NVDA version 19.x as the last compatible version of NVDA.

Regarding the NVDA speech player, You may want to try it but though it may try to sound like Eloquence or DecTalk, it doesn't.  Also, I believe the speech Player is no longer being developed.  If I'm wrong, others may want to comment.

There is a group of add-ons called RHVoice, (http://www.rhvoice.org). The only English voice I see there is Allen, a Scottish English voice. I may have missed others, though.

Again, if it's illegal, then I'll desist. However, the IBM TTS is phenomenal. It even offers access to Chinese, Japanese and Korean voices.

Yes, Ben, that IBMTTS ad on you refer to is definitely illegal. So let's please change the subject.

Then I'd strongly suggest you explore the Microsoft OneCore voices that are completely free and included with Windows 10 and beyond (maybe even 8.1).  I've been using Microsoft OneCore David for quite a while now and have downloaded some of the accented English variants as well.

Actually, that's Microsoft david. And, if I'm reading something long I'd
rather have robotic and fast than human and fast, or slow. I do get ear
fatigue, but that's with eather set of voices, plus when david is a bit
faster than 50 percent he tends to cut stuff off, it's not bad but it can be
noticeable if you are a nit pick.

Everyone to his or her own taste.  Also, it's a tool to task thing.

I know many blind individuals (and, clearly, you're one of those) who can listen to speech at rates I find incomprehensible - faster than the fastest human auctioneers speak when auctioning.  And if that works, definitely more power to you, as it cuts time significantly if you can comprehend at that speed.

I can't do it, and that's largely a function of not having to have learned how to listen to very long written materials being read by a screen reader.  But I also don't read at a speed that strikes me as much different than a typical mid-range speech rate.  All my "language stuff" is one big ball of wax.
