Locked apostrophe pronunciation

Brian Williams

Hi all, After installation NVDA on my new laptop and changing some of the setting I have hit a problem and can’t work out what I’ve done or how to undo it.

When writing text into a document and insert an apostrophe NVDA pronounces the word and the letter at the end separately. For example, haven’t is pron=unced haven t, or couldn’t is pronounced couldn t. any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks

Brian

Did you make changes in the Punctuation/symbol pronunciation dialog?

I did try and change the pronunciation of ticketwo apostrophe and bang two exclamation  which is what I am used to here in the UK. Mayb maybe it’s something I’ve messed up there. Is there a quick way to return to defaults and try again?

NVDA doesn't have a restore defaults button in that dialog, but this will work:
1. Find your user configuration directory. If you're using an installed version of NVDA, Pressing Windows+r and typing %appdata%\nvda should put you there.
2. Delete symbols-en.dic.
3. Restart NVDA.

Thanks for your advice. Worked wonders. I have successfully changed the pronunciation of tick and it now pronounces apostrophe. However I am not having the same success with bang. I want to replace it with exclamation. I have followed the same procedure as apostrophe but oddly no success.

Thanks again

Brian

There is no restore defaults button in the dialog.  Someone may tell you how to manually change the settings by saying what the defaults should be, if you aren't sure.

I don't know if there is a way to restore defaults, perhaps by making a portable copy from the exe file, then copying files concerning the dialog you are working with.  Someone may furnish instructions.

Perhaps someone can discuss if there is a technical reason why there isn't a restore defaults button or, perhaps better, a button that will restore the selected item to its default.  There may be times when people don't want to lose everything but want to try changing one setting.

What are you currently getting for "apostrophe"?

There is the symbol:  in- word '
which is what you'd have in contractions that would need to be changed from "tick" to "apostrophe."  There are also three standalone instances of that character.

The easiest way to make sure you've got all of them is to enter the word  (no quotes) "tick" in the filter box, then what gets returned from that filtering in the first 4 entries are all of the various instances of the tick/apostrophe where you would want to change the replacement to apostrophe and, possibly, left apostrophe and right apostrophe if you are concerned about pairing.

In looking at the file Mr. Spivey made reference to, the only thing contained in it is the changes the user has made, and nothing else.  Mine has entries for the period character to make it say period rather than dot in certain contexts.  Hence the reason removing it effectively resets everything to defaults.  And since it is a text file, and probably has not too many entries for most users, if you did really want to check just what you've changed, and perhaps delete individual entries, opening it in Notepad and reviewing those lines is relatively simple.  You just have to be careful about what you're doing.

There are two apostrophes and two exclamation marks. Type each of those symbols in the search box to find them, and change both.

There are 4 apostrophes, but you only get two of them if you use the apostrophe character in the filter box.  After I noticed this when using a search on "tick" that's why I suggested using that in the filter box.  The left and right pair don't show up with the character itself.

Whether I search on the exclamation point character, or the word "bang," I only get 2 options related to those.

No Brian, the other two ticks you refer to are double quotes, as opposed to apostrophe, so you wouldn’t want to change them all.

In other words “This is a double quote” and ‘This is the apostrophe’.

Steve,

They are definitely not double quotes.  They may be "smart" single quotes, but they get announced as "tick."

For someone trying to get rid of "tick" for apostrophe, they'll probably want to get rid of "tick" for open and close single quotes as well.

Double quotes are an entirely separate character which can be found by entering the double quote in the filter and where that character is the only thing returned.

I've done this too, I don't think that is the problem, what has changed is how you present the word to the synth. Probably some kind of dictionary change? Does this occur on all synths, or just one of them.

NO removing the file then re Running NVDA creates a new one, but it of course removes changes that worked.
What I cannot understand about the original query is how changing the name of any punctuation should change the way the word is pronounced. The only way that can happen is an unfortunate choice in a dictionary.

I do feel that the multiple occurrences of some punctuation is a bit odd though. Does anyone know if this means there are several characters with the same code, or are there several occurrences of the same one with different codes?

One has to be careful on context though as dot is point in decimals.
Also, hand altering has issues with hash or number since this character as I recall is used in the system as a marker so you end up with two of them in that entry. Never be too hasty.

I don't understand the question.  If you are in the Punctuation/symbol pronunciation dialog and you are on a symbol, you can tab once to an edit field.  If you don't want tick to be spoken as tick, you can type what you want said, such as apostrophe.  You may be asking something else but I don't understand what it is if you are.

But some synths are smart enough to do it for you. Window-Eyes had a great feature for punctuation, called "Controlled By Synthesiser". This literally let the synth do its thing. If you do that with Eloquence and you type 1.1, you'll get One Point One, but if you type a full stop at the end of a sentence, it would say Period.

I think my original problem was that having attempted to change the pronunciation of tick as I typed it to say apostrophe it resulted in the text reading the word and the letter after the apostrophe as separate words.

I had no issues changing bang, but the quotes are a bit of an issue, you do not want too verbose a description. There are, by the way several bullets as well.
