I tried to install this update and it failed. I got a notice saying to check the log viewer, which yielded stuff I do not understand.

Hi Mary,

Did you get the user account control dialog warning you that NVDA wanted to make changes to your PC?  It's the same one you get every time you install / update software, but every now and then it appears behind everything else and doesn't get focus - but if you don't accept it within about 20 seconds, the install fails.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Yes, I did get that, I think. I'll try it again, but I'm pretty sure I did, because it is expected. I also got the thing warning me that some add on I had is not compatible, but I accepted that too, that the add on would be disabled. First time this happened in all my nvda downloads.

No trouble with this update on my Windows 7 machine, but ever since the last update on asimilar machine we occasionally get that phantom window again which if closed asks if you really want to exit nvda. UAC is off on these machines since it becomes a real pain for some constantly updated software. Its the same in 10, and I would have thought some easier interface that does not appear behind stuff needs to be considered by Microsoft.

Brian,

This phantom window - is that just an issue with NVDA, or do you mean it happens with installing / updating any software?

If any software, then it's likely to be something in Windows or at least beyond NVDA.  If it's strictly NVDA, could you please send me a copy of your log (ideally at debug and with no add-ons running).  Does it just happen at the time you update NVDA, or in normal use after that?

Quentin.

1. hit windows plus F
2. submit the feedback needed. I don't really have anymore to suggest, as I would not know how such an interface would work. I don't code. You can leave plenty of details and logs for them however then we can find and upvote the feedback.

I will say it again:  When you encounter something like this, ask yourself:  Should this really be typical behavior?    Then follow that up with: Are others experiencing same?

This is a singular report (to date) of this.  It's odd, and it is most likely idiosyncratic to systems where some specific certain something is "out of whack."

Whenever any inexplicable issue presents itself in Windows “out of the blue” and with seemingly no reason, these are the two things I try first, in order:

1. Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8.1, 10 & 11

2. Performing a Windows 10 or 11 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows ISO file

If #1 fixes the issue, #2 is unnecessary.

Certainly worth a shot here, and you've nothing to lose but a bit of time, and you may end up with everything as you like and expect it.

I second the DISM and SFC tools. We had a computer where the start menu wouldn't pop up. I learned about those two tools, ran them, and now it works again. It's really helpful in our environment, where we have a main hard drive image we deploy on our computers, and sometimes hardware differences, or what people do to them afterwards, messes things up a tad.

Hello!

After this update NVDA overwrites my assignmets for my Focus 40 Blue Braille display.

I assigned left rocker bar to simulate up and down arrows keys. After updating NVDA these assignments have been removed. When I try to reassign them my assignments are not saved.

When I replace the gestures.ini file with my old one which I keep as a backup, everything works as expected until NVDA is restarted. After that the assignments said above are removed.

If NVDA is running and "Save configuration when exiting NVDA" is enabled, it's possible that NVDA may override any edits you make to the gestures.ini file.

I would suggest replacing the file while NVDA has that setting disabled.

Also have you restarted not just NVDA but the whole PC since updating?

Hallo

Regarding the updating of NVDA to 2022.1 and further. Is there a possibility that the IBMTTS add-on could be updated to be compatible with the latest versions of NVDA.

I prefer to use IBMTTS because it reads theAfrikaans best. I mainly use Afrikaans in the work I do.

Hi Quentin,

Yes, I always restart my computer when I update my software, not only NVDA.

BTW, I downgraded to the previous version and problem is gone completely. So it is definitely related to the update.

I will try to report it on github later today.

This sounds like it might be related to this issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/14065

We're investigating this.  I'll provide an update once I know more myself.

Exactly!

In my case the issue occured even when I used the Input Gestures dialogue in NVDA options. And, as I described erlier, when I unloaded NVDA and replaced the gestures.ini file and started NVDA again it worked as expected until the next reload.
