Is there a way to run NVDA as a window and not a background process?
Joshua Tubbs
Hi all, The reason I ask this is because OBS (open broadcaster software) beta has a new feature to capture application-specific audio. Right now, I can't capture NVDA and/or add it as a source because nvda.exe is running in a background process and doesn't show up as a window. I know Jaws has an option to send it to the tray as an option, but does NVDA? I remember there might have been one a very long time ago. Not really needed but this is a specific use case. Thanks. |

Bring up one of NVDA's dialogs, like General Settings, and leave it open. That might give it a window you can capture audio from.

Can you choose the nvda.exe itself and input that in the plugin? I say plugin as that’s what I’m using in obs v27.x, and I can see the running processes.

The NVDA desktop shortcut invokes NVDA using the following command (with the path fully qualified, but I'm omitting it here):
nvda_slave.exe launchNVDA -r I wonder if nvda_slave has any command line options that allow NVDA to run in the taskbar as opposed to in the system tray, but I can't find any documentation for nvda_slave and invoking it with a -? or a -h switch, which are both conventional for help for a command line program, produces nothing. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 The difference between a top-flight creative man and the hack is his ability to express powerful meanings indirectly. ~ Vance Packard |

Hi, Back wqhen NVDA's GUI was first implemented (2007 or so I believe), NVDA had its own window that was always visible (named "NVDA user interface"). To minimize distraction, NVDA eventualy became an icon in system tray. Narrator follows this change as well. Cheers, Joseph |

Hmm, I actually like the way one can capture all windows audio with a program called virtual recorder. It can make demos very easy, since not only do you hear the screenreader, but the results and other sounds generated by whatever application you are using as well.

Which reminds me, is it a bug then that sometimes ends up at boot up with a window open that if you close it, you also close nvda?

This is a different method. You will be able to capture different audio sources and if using mkv, possibly mp4, you can then use ffmpetgg to extract all tracks for post editing. I am using a plugin to do this right now in obs 27.x and it works actually quite well. I can actually find all things from this session and nvda is one of those, no window necessary. If OBS can implement looking in the system tray as well, that would be nice. Time to put a fly in their ear about that, or a bee in their bonnet?

My way is to use Reaper, a Digital Audio Workstation. Put the computer on one track, and my mic on another, then I can manipulate both separately.

Thanks for posting all that Brian. I know it’s off topic here, but it’s just another way to record things. I use Reaper with a Vocaster 2 audio interface and there is no other virtual cables or third party software needed, because it has loopback inputs that you can grab to get either the computer or yourself separately, and put them on separate tracks.
I’ll say no more here, but I just wanted to thank you for posting the Reaper information. It is the most accessible Digital Audio Workstation out there bar none I’d say.
All the best

That might not work, given that we want resources on separate tracks. OBS can do up to 6. You can then extract the audio from the MKV and edit, as necessary. I've been able to now successfully do this for a few weeks now.

There’s a little trick that makes this work. Enable NVDA text highlighting in preferences. Now NVDA will be seen as an application in places like the windows sound mixer and other apps that allow you to choose an application to record from. I do that by default, the focus rectangle as I need help with aira, which is why it works for me in this plugin I’m using. Coolio!

I think he does mean the focus rectangle. I’ve seen this, I’ve also I think scene text highlighting, or maybe that also is the focus rectangle.

Thanks, Luke & Sarah. I would be (and have frequently been) lost without Focus Highlight enabled since no effort is made to keep material on the screen matching the location in the virtual buffer where NVDA has focus.
Even though I'm in a tiny minority when it comes to NVDA users in this regard, Focus Highlight is one of my very favorite functions that NVDA came out with first. Initially as an add-on, now as a part of the core code. It also makes it much easier for the blind and the sighted to collaborate when sitting in front of the same computer. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 The difference between a top-flight creative man and the hack is his ability to express powerful meanings indirectly. ~ Vance Packard |

Actually, there are 2 cases for me and all are remote. An aira agent loves it when I use it as they can keep track of what I’m talking about. Another person helping me on discord can watch focus as I find stuff on a web page.

Yeah. I am a software engineer so I’m constantly screen sharing as I walk coworkers through code I’m working on etc. This would be pretty hard for them to fall along with if it weren’t for that focus highlight thing On Aug 29, 2022, at 4:00 PM, Sarah k Alawami <marrie12@...> wrote:
