NVDA 2022.3 Beta 4 now available

Quentin Christensen

Hi everyone,

For those interested in testing out the next version of NVDA, we are pleased to share NVDA 2022.3 Beta 4 is now available for testing. This fixes the input gestures issue introduced in the previous beta. Full info and download at: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2022-3beta4/

For those running earlier beta's you will likely already have been prompted to update, as it came out yesterday - we are just a bit slow posting about it!

Quentin.

This version took very little time to install, a contrast with the last release version. I think it has to be just Windows taking time to delete stuff in the background sometimes.

I also feel like the installer starts after the music is done playing. Why not start the speech and prompts during the music, this would shave milliseconds off, and make the installer feel even faster.

The music plays because the wave file can be extracted and played much faster than all the rest of the files can be extracted buy the installer.  Installation, assumedly, doesn't begin until all the files are extracted.  The music is supposed  to provide a welcoming environment, evidently, from its emotional tone but it also lets people know that the process has started.  I don't think the start of installation can be properly speded up.  It is probably bad procedure for an installation to begin until the files have all been successfully extracted to keep it from unexpectedly stopping in the middle for some reason such as a corrupted download.

There was a discussion on my twitter and one person mentioned that, so I’m bringing it up here for those that don’t follow me. I do happen to agree. Even if the startup chime started while the music was playing, I’d be happy with that, depending on how fast your drive is as well as your processer and how much ram and VRam you have.  In my case 24 gigs of VRam and 16 gigs of ram. So not fast, but fast enough to do the job.

When I installed the beta it didn’t take long. The music played then it did its thing.

Following, I think that same twitter thread, I created an issue to explore whether using a shorter launcher startup sound would make things quicker.  Anyone with extra information or thoughts either way is encouraged to comment on the issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/14068

Kind regards

I  don't see why it makes any difference.  I see no connection between the length of a sound being played by an audio player because setup  tells it to and when files begin to be extracted. I believe that if there is any difference that worrying about it is an obsession with speed.  What in the world difference does it make if an installation, which you don't do often, takes a second or even three or four seconds longer?

At least the set up sound doesn’t have low-fidelity water noises in it, like another program I could mention. LOL
