Add-on Updater and Windows App Essentials 22.09 #addonrelease

Hi all,

Add-on Updater and Windows App Essentials 22.09 are now available:

IMPORTANT: these releases require NVDA 2022.2 or later (2022.2.2 or later is recommended for security).

A key change for Add-on Updater is checking add-on download integrity. Years ago, when NVDA add-ons community members were discussing add-on download and updating functionality, one of the concerns was making sure what users are downloading is indeed the package the add-on author has published. Among different suggestions such as hashes and digital signatures, as part of an add-on store proposal, NV Access has adopted SHA256, a popular hashing algorithm used in digital signatures and verifying file downloads to make sure data is not tampered with. Recently, I and Noelia Martinez began sharing SHA256 values for add-on releases not only for power users to compare hash values, but also to prepare our add-ons for submission to the NV Access add-on store (work in progress; discussion and feedback on add-on store should be shared with NV Access directly, not on this forum please as the feature is under development). Therefore, Add-on Updater 22.09 and later will check add-on package integrity by comparing hash values coming from add-on update sources against the value obtained after downloading add-on updates, and if they do not match, add-on updates will not be installed (if add-on update dialog is shown, an error message will be presented). As of August 2022, community add-ons website (technically, a repository used to store compatibility information for add-ons registered on community add-ons website) stores hash values for some add-ons. As for what add-on authors should do, that’s reserved for discussion on NVDA add-ons mailing list.

Regarding Windows App Essentials 22.09, this release resolves an issue reported by a user on GitHub where NVDA will not announce status changes when using parts of Visual Studio 2022. More importantly, this is the first release to require Windows 10 Version 21H2 (November 2021 Update) or later and is officially compatible with upcoming Windows 10 Version 22H2.

You can get these add-on releases in a number of ways:

  1. Manual download: the links provided will let you download these releases now.
  2. Add-on update sources: if you are using Add-on Updater 22.08 and later, provided that you are using NVDA 2022.2 or later, you can get these releases from various update sources (community add-ons website or Spanish catalog) once sources are updated to offer these releases to you (for community add-ons website, I have queued these releases for distribution on that website so it won’t show up right away).

Enjoy the new releases.

Cheers,

Joseph

I just checked for add-on updates in the NVDA tools menu after reading this and was told no add-on updates are available. I have the latest version of NVDA. So, do I need to download these add-on updates directly from their respective websites, or will they eventually be available for download through the NVDA tools menu?

Do you have the addon updater by Joseph installed into your version of
NVDA, Abbie?

In addition, in Joseph's original message, he notes:

"You can get these add-on releases in a number of ways:

  1. Manual download: the links provided will let you download these releases now.

So you have to be using NVDA 2022.2 or later AND have the existing Add-On Updater 22.08.  If you want these now, the easiest thing is to click on the links supplied by Joseph when NVDA is running, and I'll repeat them below.  If your browser asks what you want to do after clicking, answer, "Open." The update will download to a temporary folder behind the scenes and NVDA will then open and install it as soon as the download is complete.  The links:

OK, I said "click on."  I presume every member of this group understands that "click on" in an instruction set means "activate."  Even I slip, occasionally.

Thanks, Brian. She's 1 of my web hosting clients, quite knowledgeable,
I might add, so she does know that. & the remainder of your message
was very informative.

Hi all,

Update: Add-on Updater and Windows App Essentials 22.09 are now being distributed via community add-ons website. If you are running Add-on Updater 22.08 and using NVDA 2022.2, see if new add-on updates are available.

Enjoy the new releases.

P.S. It appears I may need to release Windows App Essentials 22.10 in October after all based on promising results from latest prerelease tests - more on that later.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi.  I had to check for add-on updates manually, even though "automatically check for add-on updates" is checked.  I've had that happen a few times with several add-ons.

Thanks,

Louise

Hi, Jackie and all. Yes, I have the add-on updater installed. This afternoon, when I turned on my computer, I was immediately notified that the updates were available. I downloaded them with no difficulty. All's well that ends well.

Or, as I often say, "all's well thatt ends in a well."
