Running the latest NvVDA beta. Why when running beta's do you get that wonderful error ding when openning a web page?

Well, it's beta software, so some bugs are a assumed. Right? That's how this works?

Whenever an error is encountered which is written to the log, in alpha and beta versions of NVDA, this produces an audible beep. That's the error sound you can hear. In fact, you likely encounter many of the same errors running a release candidate or version and they also get written to the log - but there is no audible sound. The sound is because alpha versions are often used by developers, add-on authors and code contributors, to test new features and fixes and knowing when an error is encountered helps with this. NVDA may often try something else when it hits an error, and so from an end user perspective, you may never know that error was encountered. So running the beta version, you may hear the beep, even when nothing seems wrong. While you can report the errors which cause these beeps if you can ascertain exactly how to reproduce them - the most important errors are those which have an impact on use. Kind regards Quentin.

Just wonder why the beta sees openning a web page as a error.

It doesn't see opening a web page as an error. All sorts of things
occur when a web page opens. At least one thing is occurring that
NVDA doesn't treat properly and thus the error sound is heard.

A web page opens but there is no one thing that is the opening of a web page. Gene On 8/30/2022 8:15 PM, Don H wrote:

Also error beeps are on by default, and not all errors are actually meaningful errors. Often its because of a change which the timing of routines makes the screenreader think its an erroneous interpretation but then it is put right once the item updates correctly. Its often impossible to decide on if it really is an error or not, and if the system suffers no issues due to it, then its not really anything to worry about.

Try running some older software then switch to something newer often you get all sorts of errors which are recovered from very quickly. Remember the system has no crystal ball and has no idea of what you might be about to do. Brian -- bglists@... Honestly, its nothing to worry about unless the resulting experience after it shows you that nvda is not working as it should.

It can even vary on the same page in different browsers. Normally I find the error is due to nvda trying to figure out what is there while the page is still loading. Much more important is that if you get an error while navigating a page and you are stopped from actually doing something by it. Then its time to report it. Brian -- bglists@...
