overly talkative Thunderbird after recent updates

Steve Wettlaufer

I don't know if this is a screen reader issue, a Thunderbird issue or both, but I could use a little help if anybody has any to offer.

Basically, Thunderbird is far too chatty since the last few version updates.  At the moment I'm running 102.2.1, in case that makes a difference.  The problem occurs when I'm in another window, for example in Firefox watching a YouTube video.  When new emails come in, the screen reader announces their arrival by reading at a minimum the sender and subject line, and sometimes even a bunch of the message.  This is irritating to me, especially if I happen to be watching or listening to something that requires I turn the volume up.

I recall having a similar issue to this many years ago, but at some point it sorted itself out.  I'm not sure if that was due to something Thunderbird did intentionally or a happy accident on someone's part, but if I can avoid having to wait for a repeat performance of whatever it was I would like that.  So assuming that I'm not the only one experiencing this, is there any way of quieting things down?

Thanks,

Steve

You don't say which screen-reader you are using.  If you are using NVDA, I have a suggestion.

I should say that, since this is an NVDA list, I am going to assume you are using NVDA but it should be stated since people shouldn't have to make assumptions about what is being used.

In NVDA, turn off report dynamic content changes.  The toggle is NVDA key 5.

If that doesn't help, NVDA may be sending notifications to Windows.  Let us know if turning off dynamic content doesn't help and we will explain how to turn off notifications for Thunderbird.  That may solve the problem.

Sorry.  I thought it would be a given that I was using NVDA since this is the NVDA group.  I'm using the latest version of NVDA.

I should clarify that I didn't notice the list the message came from when I sent my first message.  I wouldn't have sent the second one if I hadn't sent the first.  But it is asked by the moderator that people identify the versions of programs they are asking about.  While it may be that a lot of people are using the current version of NVDA, we don't know what version a specific questioner is using.

On further experimentation and consideration, I doubt that turning off dynamic content changes will help.  I am using Thunderbird Portable and I don't have this behavior.  I suspect that the portable version won't give notifications, which I think you are getting.

To turn off notifications for specific programs in Windows 10, do the following:
Open the start menu.  Type notifications in the Windows start menu search and press enter.
Notification settings will come up.
Start tabbing and, after you tab a lot of times, perhaps about ten, you will get to different programs.  You will tab to a button that says something like Thunderbird button.  Tab once more to a button that says something like Thunderbird toggle button.  It is the toggle button you want to work with.  Press the space bar to toggle notifications on or off for the specific program.  Toggles generally seem to be on by default.

There is no OK button.  Settings take immediate effect.  When finished, close the window with alt f4.

I would suggest opening Thunderbird Settings, General Pane, then look through the settings in the Incoming Mails section.  There is a checkbox that allows you to toggle notifications on/off for incoming messages and, if you choose to have them on, whether they should be presented via Windows notifications (formerly toasts) or using Thunderbird's own built-in notification pop-up.

If it's off, you should not be getting any sort of notification that involves the screen reader reading it.

There are also checkboxes for playing a sound when a message arrives and for whether a system tray icon should be shown when new messages have arrived.
