could nvda announce entries in the Windows 11 emoji panel?

Windows11 Version 21H2 (OS build 22000.978) nvda-alpha-26596; nvda does not report any items in the emoji panel. |

I just tried that alpha snapshot on the same Windows 11 and it seems to be working here. Maybe try restarting the PC and see if that helps? Quentin. On Fri, Sep 16, 2022 at 3:23 PM Rowen Cary <manchen_0528@...> wrote:

From my latest test a moment ago the only way to read emojis is to use object navigation. In Windows 10 using just the arrow keys used to work, but now it doesn't.

Hi, In addition to usual version info, can you tell me if this happens with or without Windows App Essentials add-on installed? If Windows App Essentials is not running, it might be due to UIA event registration setting (if set to "selective" or the checkbox is checked (depending on NVDA release), NVDA will not handle events from places other than focused control, which affects Windows 10 emoji panel where NVDA may appear to do nothing when in fact emojis are being selected). Cheers, Joseph |

Hmmm, I just tried on my laptop just now and the emoji pannel seems to work just fine, though on my laptop Windows App Essentials is running and I did not turn on any of the developer/advance settings.
Maybe I'll have to investigate further on my desktop back home to see what's going on. Though, on my laptop I just updated to NVDA 2022.2.3. |

And just for the record, I don't have ANY add-ons installed currently (And I never had a problem accessing the emoji panel😀) On Mon, Sep 19, 2022 at 12:54 PM Supanut Leepaisomboon <supanut2000@...> wrote: Hmmm, I just tried on my laptop just now and the emoji pannel seems to work just fine, though on my laptop Windows App Essentials is running and I did not turn on any of the developer/advance settings. --

Hi > Joseph, I installed Windows App Essentials and also tried disabling all add-ons, as well as changing the Selective Registration UIA option of the NVDA advanced settings panel, the emoji panel doesn't work as expected. On Sun, Sep 18, 2022 at 10:56 PM, Joseph Lee wrote:

Hi, I see. Can I get a debug log from you directly? That way I can analyze what's up and let folks know what's going on. Also, before sending me the debug log, try pressing Windows+V and see if clipboard history works, and hopefully it can give me a better picture. Cheers, Joseph |

Hi, I will send the debug log to your mail. Of course, if this thread allows me to post here too. Thanks On Tue, Sep 20, 2022 at 07:30 PM, Joseph Lee wrote:

Of course, if this thread allows me to post here too.- If you are considering posting debug logs, or portions of them, here please don't. We in group administration have finally come very close to snuffing this out entirely, and for good reason. If an assistant wants a debug log, they should do exactly what Mr. Lee did, and request that it be sent privately. This is not only to prevent clutter on the group, as most people cannot interpret these logs to begin with, but for member protection. There are times where logs will contain information that you might not wish to have placed out in public where anyone can see it, and our archives are public. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it . . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt |

Hi, And the log gave me quite a puzzling picture: normally when emoji panel opens and one navigates among emojis, a UIA element selected event is raised by the panel to inform NVDA about item selection. This is not happening on the system where the log came from. I have a virtual machine with Windows 11 Version 21H2 (original release), the version of Windows this user is using, and I do notice UIA element selected event being fired (raised) on my virtual machine, indicating something odd happening with this particular system. Also, not all add-ns are disabled, as disabling all add-ons may provide a better picture for me to look at. As Brian indicated, the reason why I insist on private log deliveries is to not expose private information in public. Cheers, Joseph |

Hi, I'll capture the logs again if needed. |

Hi all, Version 22H2 (OS build 22621.382) The emoji panel works as expected on this version of Windows. Thanks |

Update to my earlier message: After poking around a bit more on my desktop, I think I finally found out what caused the emoji pannel to not work properly on my home desktop. It's down to one of the addons I have, the NVDA global commands extension. After updating it to the latest version the emoji pannel works as expected.

This is one of the reasons that one of the basic troubleshooting steps for NVDA is restarting with add-ons disabled. If a misbehavior disappears when you do this you instantly know that the issue lies with an add-on, not NVDA itself. 2. The Add-On Updater add-on, which will eventually be integrated into the NVDA core, is your friend. At least if the add-ons you use are all obtained from one of the two official repositories. 3. If you are using "home grown" add-ons that are not a part of one of the two official repositories, you need to keep those up-to-date. They can and do sometimes screw things up as time goes by. NVAccess is not responsible for any add-ons beyond the couple that they actually created and maintain (and I can't remember what those are at the moment). Add-on issues, once identified, need to be communicated to their respective maintainers/owners/creators with requests for a fix. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it . . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt |

Hi,,
this raises an interesting question. Can add-ons be enabled one by one to troubleshoot such issues? JAWS has had a setting for a while now where one can use default settings to start JAWS with, and then another one where scripts can be enabled one by one to rule out user quirks. I've never had anything odd happen with add-ons, just throwing out the question here to think about, mainly for NV Access and developers of NVDA. |

Hi, The answer is a resounding yes - you can enable or disable individual add-ons (one at a time). As for its internals, I'll do my best to cover it in an Inside Story post on add-on flags (running/disabled/enabled). Cheers, Joseph |

I'd love to be able to do something akin to what's called a clean start under Windows where I can enable things "by halves" to determine which add-on specifically is causing a problem. It's a much faster "search and destroy" method that doing one by one if you have a lot of add-ons active. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it . . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt |

To enable/disable addons, there are buttons in the manager.

NVDA, Tools, Manage add-ons. Find the addon you want, press Disable, repeat. What you can't do is select multiple addons and disable. But arrowing through the list and pressing Alt d on one works just as well. On 9/23/2022 6:11 AM, Brian Vogel wrote:

I think I have somewhere around 10 installed. But it would be really handy to be able to selectively disable a group of 5, then if the issue is not resolved, re-enable them and disable the second group of 5. Lather, rinse, repeat by halves in the group where the issue keeps showing up until I've narrowed it down to "the one." -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it . . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt |
