Version 22.10: Add-on Updater, Event Tracker, Windows App Essentials #addonrelease
Hi all, Version 22.10 of the following add-ons are now available (manual download for now): • Add-on Updater: https://github.com/josephsl/addonUpdater/releases/download/22.10/addonUpdater-22.10.nvda-addon • Event Tracker: https://github.com/josephsl/evtTracker/releases/download/22.10/evtTracker-22.10.nvda-addon • Windows App Essentials: https://github.com/josephsl/wintenApps/releases/download/22.10/wintenApps-22.10.nvda-addon
Sometime this weekend I will ask add-ons community to queue these updates for distribution on community add-ons website.
In some ways, Event Tracker and Windows App Essentials (and to some extent, Office Desk) releases are intertwined. Event Tracker 22.10 can track UIA drag and drop effect property changes, as well as helping some developers look into UIA item status changes. The latter change is in response to verbosity issues experienced by some, notably by users of Visual Studio 2022, and as a result, Windows App Essentials 22.10 removes UIA item status event handler. Speaking of event handling, Windows App Essentials can now announce UIA drop target effect property in more places, notably when rearranging action items in Windows 10 Action Center and Windows 11 quick settings.
Turning to Add-on Updater 22.10, this release adds two new add-on update sources, both contributed by Woody Tseng. These are community add-ons catalog maintained by NVDA communities in China and Taiwan, introducing update check protocols 5 and 6, respectively.
Special note on Windows App Essentials: as of version 22.10, Windows App Essentials is in maintenance mode. I noted in various places that Windows App Essentials will be maintained as long as Windows Insider Program exists. But I also know that I cannot maintain this add-on forever, more so as I need to make some major decisions soon. Besides, even if the biggest goal was not achieved yet (accessible apps and advocacy), one of the major objectives was achieved as of upcoming NVDA 2022.4: most of the add-on features are now part of NVDA screen reader itself, more so in the global plugin portion. Namely, drag and drop target effect announcement, the highlight of Windows App Essentials 22.10, is now available in NVDA 2022.4 (alpha releases at the moment), a fruit of at least three years’ worth of hard work. Once NVDA 2022.4 stable version is released (don’t know when), the only big thing the add-on will add is virtual desktop switch announcement and features/workarounds/bug fixes in apps; even for the virtual desktop switch announcement, I’m working on a solution that no longer involves a global plugin. And once NVDA 2022.4 is released, I will ask you to upgrade to 2022.4.
Also, the upcoming Windows 10 feature update (Version 22H2) is a minor release that will be distributed as an enablement package (optional cumulative update). This means no major features are forthcoming unless Microsoft says otherwise, making it easier to switch to maintenance mode for Windows 10 users. This is not easily the case for Windows 11 as new features and changes are introduced constantly, more so with an optional update in October for Version 22H2 that will add features such as tabbed File Explorer.
Therefore, I’m declaring Windows App Essentials is in maintenance mode – full maintenance mode in Windows 10, maintenance mode with feature additions and changes in Windows 11. On Windows 10, this means no new code will be added unless Microsoft makes major changes to Windows 10, and some workarounds will be removed. In Windows 11, features will be supported if it comes to most or all Windows Insiders or makes their way to people using stable builds. As for when I will end add-on maintenance, I don’t know, but the add-on will be maintained until at least July 2023, with a possibility to return to it in late 2025 to remove support for Windows 10 completely. I will do my best to give you end of life notice months in advance so you can make arrangements.
Thank you. Cheers, Joseph |

Well he said the ones he has just put up have manual links, For example, I just clicked on the link to the add ons updater and it downloaded, I then went to the file and did open with, and selected nvda. It then said a version of this is already in nvda, do you want to update it, I answered yes, it did so then I had to agree to restart nvda.

If and assumedly when it gets to the normal web site, add on updater already installed, assuming it is, will ask about any other valid updates and you can make the process more automated. Also of course if you look at the list of add ons in add on manager there are details given of what version you are running and its enabled state. Brian -- bglists@... Joseph could not have been more clear, in my opinion.
1. The add-ons are complete. 2. The request has been made to queue them through the normal automatic distribution channels, but that request has not yet been acted upon. 3. Manual download links have been provided for those who wish to apply these updates prior to their entering into the automatic distribution channels. You don't have to do anything to get these updates if you're willing for them to show up via the normal automatic update channels once they've been queued there. But if you "have to have them now" a way has been provided for you to download the add-on. Once you've done that, if NVDA is running, activating the add-on file will cause it to be installed in NVDA. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 It is well to open one's mind but only as a preliminary to closing it . . . for the supreme act of judgment and selection. ~ Irving Babbitt |

Ravindran V.S.
Dear Joseph,
I have noticed that when checking for update using the Add-on Updater, even just noticed from the Spanish community source, it offers updates but not to the higher version. Seems it is just comparing the version numbers and if there is a difference it tents to update. For e.g.; I have the latest Add-On updater version 2022.10 installed direct from the link you offered. And when I check the updates, it offers to update and the version says as 2022.09 And I have noticed this with several of them. Even the Tonys Enhancement keeps on updating almost every time it is checked. And the offering is for a lower version. I tried to copy the list of offerings to show here, but cannot copy that list. This happens with the NVDA Community source too.
What am I doing wrong or anything to avoid this please? Using Windows 10 Pro; 2022 h2 64bit NVDA 2022.2.3 Add-On updater version 2022.10 Vocalizer synth
Due to a problem that NVDA loads and the speech did not come; So I have uninstalled NVDA and made a fresh installation. And Have disabled all Add-ons and just activated Add-on updater and couple of others. Trying to identify the problematic Add-on which caused this problem. Or any other facts; Narrator and other screen readers did not have this issue. Since NVDA is my primary SR got stuck a bit.
But all the Add-Ons worked fine with the previous version of NVDA.
Thanks, Ravi. V.S.Ravindran. Excuses leads to failure!””

Hi, This is more towards add-on source repository maintenance area as it takes time for repository maintainers to update download links. I have elected to compare version differences rather than trying to see which one is newer due to subtleties with Python, soething beyond Add-on Updater's control. Cheers, Joseph |

Thank you Joseph for your swift response. Got it, so need to check for every add-ons version number before updating them. Specially if we install the latest version from the direct links. Cheers, Ravi. V.S.Ravindran. Excuses leads to failure!””

Thanks Joseph, But I don't seem to see the new translation docs merged into the add-on updater. |
|
Hi, Translators should have received new strings a few days ago. I usually time add-on releases shortly after translations are merged into stable branch of my add-ons, so for Add-on Updater, the earliest release time frame is Thursday night in western United States right after messages are merged. Also, due to odd folder structure in use when merging Add-on Updater messages from translators, an extra step is performed to put files in correct locations before creating add-on installer package. I do have plans to release Add-on Updater updates shortly after NVDA 2022.3 and/or 2022.4 stable version is released for various reasons, localization updates being one (2022.3, maybe depending on how exhausted I get around that time from everything other than NVDA; 2022.4, yes as I hope to have a relaxing winter break from school by then). I might expand on this thread when talking about add-on releases in a separate post (no, that won't be an Inside Story of NVDA post unless I get a request asking me to go into details on compatibility breaking releases; one factor is impact of changing inner workings of components and how they can affect such things as speech synthesizers; too early to say, but I foresee massive changes on the horizon, and no, I'm not an NV Access staff). Cheers, Joseph |
