In fear over upggrading
Brian's Mail list account
I think you need to address the underlying cause here. In any new version with no add ons, it works, so that is a bit of a clue. Might I suggest that it could be an add on which is corrupt in some way or indeed may be just interacting with something else?

The fact that its doing it with an update seems to me to suggest the latter, as if it was an incompatible add on in itself, you would get a warning first. Unfortunately you have burned your bridges. Whenever I get something like this, I make a simple copy of the portable version and see that it runs, then update one, but not both of them. This way you can restore the working version quite simply, whether it be the installed or the portable one. However in the end you need to identify what the culprit actually is. Do one thing at a time and test, its the only really sure way to see what has happened, and do it on a portable version. Brian -- bglists@... I don't see any reason to empty the Recycle Bin. You may if you
wish but files won't run that are there. They just sit and do
nothing.

This will be in add remove, then you can go to run, type %appdata% then nuke the nvda folder and empty the recycle bin. I would then restart, start narrator, find your installer for nvda and install.

Good idea: uninstall. Does NVDA have an uninstall somewhere in its menus or should I try to find it in the windows control panel add / remove function? This stuff gets so confusing to an old feble mind.

Hi Howard,
are you using anything other than Windows Defender or a third-party firewall? Not sure if you need to accept something in that case. What happens if you start Narrator, then try to enable NVDA? Is there an error message that Narrator is able to catch? Regards, Nermin

As I fearred: I installed the 22.2.3 and it won't start.- You really should take the time and effort to diagnose and fix what's causing this, which is unlikely to be NVDA itself. Once you have a portable version you can use, I'd uninstall the installed version of NVDA, nuke the %APPDATA%\nvda folder and the NVDA folder under C:\Program Files (x86), then Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8.1, 10 & 11. for starters. Something is wrong with your system if NVDA won't start, and it's not likely to only affect NVDA. You've also not mentioned which Version and Build of Windows you're using, which would be useful to know. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Memory is a crazy woman that hoards rags and throws away food. ~ Austin O'Malley

Why not just uninstall nvda, then hose the nvda folder in %appdata% It looks like something is corrupted and right now it’s better to chop off the head when you have a headache than to deal with ht ecorruption.

As I fearred: I installed the 22.2.3 and it won't start. I think I'll have to make another portable like the one I'm running now.

I would also blow your add ons and folder of nvda in %appdata% out of the water and start over. I had to do this when a portable version corrupted and I had no idea as all was working there.

I wonder if an update will find that portable version to fix.- No. Portable versions are their own little world, entirely separate from installed versions. As Gene has noted, you can update a portable version within its own little world, but this is not how I read what you're describing. I would simply uninstall your installed version of NVDA, download the new version's installer from the NVAccess site, and install that. If you want a portable version of the latest version, you can either do that with the installer before you actually install NVDA to your system, or you can create it afterward from the freshly installed instance of NVDA - your choice. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Memory is a crazy woman that hoards rags and throws away food. ~ Austin O'Malley

If you update from within the portable version, it will remain a portable version. If you update add-ons, they will be updated in the portable version if you update them in that version.
