NVDA not speaking after Win 11 upgrade to 22H2
Gregory J. Rosmaita
Hello. Reporting for a friend who may or may not be able to directly
participate in this thread. PROBLEM: NVDA stops working as expected as soon as it loads, preventing the user from being able to use it to interact with his computer. NVDA will open & start. The setting menus' buttons are now reset & no longer work to what normal NVDA defaults are/should be. NVDA version: * NVDA 2022.2.3 PC INFO * Windows Home 11 22H2 (9/20/22) 64-bit * OS Build: 22621.521 SYSINFO * RAM: 16GB * Intel 2.60 GHz i7-9570h CPU |

What steps have you and he taken to troubleshoot? Have you tried running the com reg tool, scanning windows for errors? Restarting the system?

So you are saying there is no log on screen so it goes straight into windows? Then you hear the sound of nvda starting then nothing after that. NVDA ends up on the task bar and may or may not be heard. If that is the case use the Windows key + letter D to put it on the desktop. If nvda is loading but not speaking it might of some how gone to no speech. Use the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter S it should then tell you if it is set to no speech if it is find a synth package I know E speak is default and see if speech comes back. Try also the nvda key + letter S to toogle it to speech just in case it was accidentally turned off. Try also looking under the volume controls to see if nvdas is set to zero. Press the windows key and in the search box type sndvol then press the enter key. You will need to look for the volume control for nvda and turn it up.. Only last week I just upgraded 3 machines to windows 11 but had no sound problems when nvda was installed.. If they press the windows key does nvda speak? or even on the desk top? I am thinking also get them to see what sound card is assigned under the synth settings. Gene nz ng On 30/09/2022 6:47 am, Gregory J. Rosmaita wrote:

At times, if NVDA goes silent, for whatever reason, I activate windows narrator with ctrl+windows+enter, to then try trouble-shoot issues? Jacob Kruger On 29 September 2022 20:05:45 "Gregory J. Rosmaita" <gregory.rosmaita@...> wrote:

E-speak is not the default in Windows10 and higher. Microsoft One
Core voices are the default.

Running Narrator, then checking which synthesizer is being used, with Narrator speaking what is found is one way to find out which one is being used. When Narrator is running, first issue the command insert, either insert 3 on the main keyuboard. That is, hold insert and press 3. This is the Narrator pass through command. Then issue the command insert, either insert, control s. That is, hold insert, and while doing so press control and s. The select synthesizer dialog will open. You are on the synthesizer being used in the combo box when the dialog opens. You can try using other synthesizers in the list. Gene On 9/29/2022 2:07 PM, hurrikennyandopo

He could turn on narrator as sometimes this indicates that nvda is working just not speaking.

I sometimes get NVDA not speaking due to the order in which it loads in a given system at which point it selects no speech since the device driver for sound did not load first. this then gets hard coded into the nvda.ini file and you are basically stuffed unless you can use another screenreader to diagnose this from the log. I'm not saying it is the case here, but windows updates do have a tendency toward this sort of thing, where sound only appears after the computer has loaded all its start up bits. I think from what he said the default synth will be one of the Microsoft voices, and part of the reason for trying narrator is to see whether the system can use the voices. If it cannot then the problem has to be elsewhere. I suspect he may not be hearing even the rising tones, at least that was what I inferred from what was said.

do other systems sounds work or is the driver just not loaded.Perhaps the computer is what we used to call safe mode? Brian -- bglists@... Sent via blueyonder.(Virgin media) Please address personal E-mail to:- briang1@..., putting 'Brian Gaff' in the display name field. ----- Original Message -----
