Screen Review Mode

Turning it off sometimes is different from rebooting the pc. I can't recall what the differences are now, but there is a big difference especially if you have fast start on, which I disabled as I don't need it any longer.

Hi Everyone

Thanks.

I ended up reinstalling NVDA.

By the way, Brian said I did not mention restarting my PC. I didn't mention it as I turn it off quite often.

Well, it needed to be asked.

It's also important to note that "turning the machine off" these days does not necessarily mean that the machine has been truly restarted, by which I mean that Windows itself is reloaded from disk from scratch at boot time.   If Fast Startup remains enabled on a computer, and it is on by default under Windows 10 and 11, shutting down your machine does not really shut it down in the way it used to.  It is put into a special form of hibernation where the Windows system state is written out to disk and that state will be loaded again when powered back up.

It is essential that either Fast Startup be off and you power cycle the machine or, if it's on, that you use the Restart command, which forces Windows to be reloaded from disk when the machine comes up again.

I've seen this on and off in windows 7 as well. I have a feeling it has to do with something Windows does, or maybe does not do that either nvda misses or its never seen. I've seen it in super anti spyware at times.

Actually every once in a while I need to do this, I don't mind actually . btw you should be updating to the latest windows 10 which I can't remember right now. You should be running 2021 something if I recall.

Subject: [nvda] Screen Review Mode

Hello Everyone

I am running Windows 10 H2 Build 19044.2006 using NVDA 2022.2.4.

I used to be able to set the review mode to Screen Review and could then read the required information. Now, I can still do this but I have to set it back to Object Review Mode and then back to Screen Review Mode each time. If I don't, I just see "Top" and "Bottom" when I try to read the screen.

Is there a setting I have changed inadvertently or is this a problem with the latest version of NVDA?

I have tried running NVDA with all the addons disabled and run the Com Registration Tool, in case that made any difference.

Thanks

And it looks like Pele's done all of the basic troubleshooting steps (although restarting the computer, and I mean using Restart, was not mentioned - if that hasn't been done, do that).

If what's been done included a system restart, and the issue persists, then uninstalling and reinstalling NVDA would be the next step

Hi.  I just tried using screen review with NVDA 2022.2.4, and there was no problem.  I didn't have to toggle between various review modes to perform navigation.

Thanks,

Blurg! I’m used to a different schema for build numbers re something else I’m testing. Sorry about that, my bad.  I guess I’m human after all, at least, last I checked.

Sarah, Windows 10 Version 21H2, Build 19044.2006 is the latest version of Windows 10.  I've never quite figured out why Microsoft bothered with Version and main build numbers as separate things, as those two are always in lock step.  All Version 21H2 has Build 19044, it's only the dot level that changes within a given Version & Build.
