my friend has an issue.
Curtis Delzer
Would someone please suggest a fix for my friend's issue below.
First of all, let me state that this isn't happening on websites. It's only happening on files that I have created in notepad. Now, word rap is on. However, when I press the down arrow key, I am being directed not to the next line as normally happens, but for some reason, I am being directed to the next paragraph instead. Also, occasionally although a letter appears in a word when I check the spelling of that word, that letter is being skipped when the whole word is being read for some reason. I think this is related to the paragraph problem. I would like to try to figure out what's causing this situation and correct it. I'm sure it's a very simple fix. If you have any thoughts or ideas in this situation, please let me know. -- Curtis Delzer H.S. K6VFO Rialto, CA curtis@... |

Does the problem also occur in other programs like Wordpad, Word, or other editors.

What screen-reader is being used? Have you tried another one? Have you rebooted since the problem began? Gene On 10/2/2022 11:20 PM, Curtis Delzer wrote:

first screen reader is NVDA, wouldn't be on any other list. :)

But we don't know if this is happening in other programs. We don't know if this is specifically a notepad problem or a general one when working in an editor.

We also don't know what happens when the person tries Narrator and/or JAWS. While I doubt this is a screen-reader problem, we can't assume that. Gene On 10/2/2022 11:49 PM, Curtis Delzer wrote:

I'm guessing one of the Control keys on the keyboard is stuck.

Give those control keys a good few whacks.

If the control key were stuck, there would be all sorts of other problems. And if it is stuck in Notepad, if you are using NVDA, you don't skip lines when you down arrow in Notepad. The line you are on is repeated and you can't move down in that way..

No reboot with all add ons disabled, assuming there are any. Maximise notepad then see if it still does it.

Try it on a portable version of nvda with no adjustments to the settings at all. I have seen times when Notepad is typed into, but occasionally doubles up on letters or simply does not echo back when looking around. Normally, as has been said already, a complete shut down of the computer and a cold start up, not a fast restart or whatever, fixes those issues where obviously parts of the system get corrupted. Sorry, but at least in Windows 11 you are wrong.

Control down arrow changes to and read the next line... I have tried just now restarting NVDA without add-ons... Perhaps in Windows 11, the response is different. I tested this in Windows 10 before I sent my message and what I described happens there.

I believe it happens in earlier versions of Windows as well. That is my not too distinct recollection, though I haven't done this in some time with earlier versions. Whatever the case, a stuck control key doesn't result in the behavior described in the message in Windows 11 Notepad. And lots of other commands wouldn't work if the control key were stuck. Two other thoughts. Dictionary entries can cause some very odd things to happen, and please don't bash keyboards on laptops, they are often pretty flimsy to start with.

When it comes to laptop keyboards, these days you often cannot replace them as a part, either. Many are fused into the top unit for the machine that contains the mousepad, power button, etc., and the top unit as a whole is a very expensive replacement part. In May I opened an NVDA Issue requesting that the Dictionary functionality be expanded to allow selective enable/disable of individual entries. Often this would be really handy not only for debugging purposes, but if you have single-purpose entries that should only be in effect when working in a specific context that might cause trouble elsewhere. For those interested: Add Enable/Disable for Individual Dictionary Entries #13660 -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Memory is a crazy woman that hoards rags and throws away food. ~ Austin O'Malley |
