NVDA DOES NOT READ DELETED CHARACTERS WHEN BACKSPACING

Morne van der Merwe

Hello list,

I'm running the latest version of NVDA and the latest version of Windows 11 and Office 365.

Sometimes, when I type in any Office program and I press backspace to delete something, NVDA does not announced the deleted characters/words.  I have to guess how far I deleted a word.  And then suddenly NVDA does announce it.  Most of the time NVDA does not.

Is there a solution?

Kind regards

I don't know if this will help, but try the following:
After you open a document, move to the desktop or to another opened window and then back into the program again.  That may solve the problem.

If this is the same problem that is popping up in many editing scenarios
It is like NVDA seems to be losing focus and stops speaking
When doing things like backspace/deleting
As well as speaking when the arrow keys are used

The work around is to get the focus back to the edit box/window

Some users ;have recommended using the alt key twice

The point is to leave the window and return, but when working with a ribbon program, I haven't seen discussion of whether that works.  So I said to leave the window and return in ways I know would work if that is the solution.  If pressing alt twice in a ribbon program solves the problem, that would be the easiest way.

I think I'm experiencing something pretty similar, especially when using Microsoft Word 365. Running Windows 11 22H2 and NVDA 2022.3.
From my experience with my laptop, when typing something in Word NVDA would just stop announcing the deleted character when using the backspace key (this happened quite often and I don't know what caused it). Tried disabling Office Desk addon and that doesn't seem to help.
