I Broke the Help System in NVDA

CJ Daniel <cj_daniel@...>

Hello,

Long-time user of JAWS &, more recently, the Mac. But, I’m getting my feet wet with NVDA & I pulled a stupid mistake with my first install.

When trying to launch the Help System, I accidentally chose the DAISY Reader option for “Which App do you want to use for this file?” And now, every time I try to launch a help topic, such as the User Manual or Hot Key Commands, I just drop out to the desktop. I need to change this default to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, but I can’t seem to do that. I’ve already reinstalled NVDA, but no joy! Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,

CJ

Jackie

CJ, what version of Windows are you using? Because this is now no
longer an NVDA problem, but a Windows 1.

If you're using Windows 10, go to settings (windows key i), then apps,
then default apps. Try choosing set defaults by file type or set
defaults by app & see if that gets you where you need to be.

Do you know how to set default programs?  Help files in NVDA open in the default browser.  If you set a browser as default, I think that will stop the problem.  You may need to set a different browser as default, then set the one you want to get things properly associated.  If that doesn't solve the problem, I and others may have other suggestions.

I don't really know where "the whole NVDA help system" resides, and I just finished doing some digging.  But I was able to locate the Quick Key Commands Reference and User Guide.  These are located under:

C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\documentation\{insert the correct abbreviation for your language here - en for English}

The files are named:
keyCommands.html
userGuide.html

I can't imagine that all HTML files are set to open with DAISY, but I'll bet these two may have been set as exceptions.  You might want to try bringing up the context menu for each one, and in the Open With option going to the Choose another app option and setting the app for it to the web browser of your choosing.  Remember, if you don't use "Choose another app" that will only cause the file to be opened with whatever you might choose from the programs list once, rather than permanently.

Hi.

Would a reinstallation of NVDA fix this problem? It would be nice if instead of a reinstall NVDA would have a repair feature to fix broken files.

I believe this is under settings, windows plus I, then you can just search for default, then tab to html and set that to what ever you want. I'm going from memory as it is a bit different with windows 10 and 11, not by much, but a bit so that the steps are just a bit different and will catch you off guard if you are not ready.

This has nothing to do with NVDA.  Windows opens different files with different programs.  These are called associations.  You have to tell Windows how to open these files.  It is Windows that asked you what program you want to use to open these files, not NVDA.

We don't know what version of Windows you are using.  Setting default programs varies from version to version.

Or you can use the method Brian discussed to set an individual file type to open in a specific program.  If you need more information about how to do either of these things, ask.

Well, yes and no.  Clearly the NVDA installer is what set that file association for those specific files.  HTML files in general are not opened by anything other than a web browser.  I'd certainly hope that the choice of DAISY is not applied to every HTML file, but perhaps it is.  I have no way to test this out.

To me, the thing responsible for setting an association should be able to unset it.  And if one uninstalls and then reinstalls NVDA, this particular question should be asked again.

But you are right that this was NVDA interacting directly with a Windows-based mechanism, and if it's not able to undo it somehow, you end up having to do so by hand.

The key here is knowing "at what level" that association has been made.  If it's at the HTML extension level, then choosing a new default app for the HTML file type will do the trick.

True.  But I am here to say as group moderator that in the absence of information, it should always be presumed that a currently supported version of Windows is being referred to.  I am no longer willing to presume that anyone is using Windows 7, and unless they say they are, then it's not considered.  It's out of support even though NVDA will run on it (for now, and not too terribly much longer).

I honestly can't remember what the mechanism is under Windows 8.1, as I avoided that version of Windows as best I could.  But if it's not exactly the same under Windows 10 and 11, I do know it's very similar and done through Default Apps settings.

Hi Group,

You can also highlight a file, right click on it, choose properties, choose open with, and choose a program directly that way--making sure to check the check box that says: 'always use this program to open this file type.'

NVDA never asks this during installation or at other times.  Sometimes, for reasons I don't know, Windows asks me what program I want to open a file with when I try to open a file even if I've been opening that file with a program before.  When that happens, the same program is used for all files with the same extension in future.

I'm sure this is a Windows association setting and NVDA can't be used to change it.

The reason I said that is because setting a program as default is different in Windows 11 than Windows 10.

OK.  I've never seen it either, but I have no idea whether NVDA might have "other accessibility software sensitivity" and ask certain things on systems that have it that it never asks me.

The OP wrote, "But, I’m getting my feet wet with NVDA & I pulled a stupid mistake with my first install. When trying to launch the Help System, I accidentally chose the DAISY Reader option for 'Which App do you want to use for this file?'"   I was really not certain who was asking that question, but since "first install" was mentioned, I mistakenly presumed it might be the NVDA installer.  It appears it's not.

Sarah, I've granted a bending of rules on this one because the issue originated as a request for a fix to NVDA Help.  It so happens that this fix is accomplished via Windows, but it is still a fix to NVDA help.  That's the only reason I didn't ask for a move to the Chat Subgroup.

Its normally depended on the App from what I can tell, whether you get offered the choice or not, its a bit like the dialogue when you are downloading a file in that respect different programs have different defaults.

I thought the Daisy reader had an html display mode though, why else would daisy discs have html on them as well as audio.

Files like the User Guide and What's new etc, are simply web pages which open in your default browser - possibly the OP had recently installed a new browser or other program which could handle web pages and got asked?

Looks like lots have stepped in to offer help which is great, thank you!

I was just going to pipe up and add that, as you have come from Jaws, you might be interested in the "Switching from Jaws to NVDA" page, if you haven't seen it already: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/SwitchingFromJawsToNVDA

It has lots of answers to "I know how to do XYZ with Jaws, how do I do it with NVDA?" type questions.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Jackie,

Ureaka!  That did it!  Should have guessed I had dropped into the Window’s domain.  Still on the relearning curve for Windows, after years away on the Mac.  And yes, I’m using Windows 10.

Anyway, thanks to all who weighed in on this topic.  I look forward to learning & interacting with you all.

All the best,

CJ
