[Solved] Trouble with Punctuation Symbols - Exclamation Point/Bang and Apostrophe/Tick, specifically

Quentin Christensen

Hi Abbie,

In NVDA's symbol / punctuation dialog, there are two entries for ! (bang / exclamation mark).  If you press that symbol (shift+1 on my keyboard) it should jump between them.  The first is a "sentence ending !" - used when that symbol is the ending punctuation to a sentence, and the other is when it is used elsewhere, eg if I just type it ! there in the middle of a sentence.  Both are called "bang" by default.

Quentin.

I tried changing the way NVDA pronounces the exclamation point and the
apostrophe. But after following the instructions given on the In Process
site, NVDA now reads those punctuation marks while using the Say All
feature, even though I have the punctuation level in the speech
punctuation dialogue sent to "some." For example, when reading a
sentence, it says, "exclamation point" at the end of the sentence. But
when I read by character, it still says, "bang" when it gets to the
exclamation point.

The articles in In Process don't indicate the way the punctuation levels
should be set in the symbols dialogue in order for this to work
properly. I've tried different combinations with similar results. I even
tried deleting the replacement words from the edit field, but that
doesn't solve the problem. I've tried restarting NVDA and resetting it
to its default configuration, but that didn't solve the problem. This is
driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's because you are setting punctuation in the dialog to none. That means punctuation will be spoken when the screen-reader is set to none and to all higher levels.  In the dialog, set punctuation to some, most, or all for all punctuation marks.  Leave the NVDA punctuation setting at none.  You won't hear any punctuation.

This is a complicated dialog and you can set perhaps hundreds of items.

But doing that in your case might not give you the results you want.  At what level do you want specific punctuation marks read? If you want certain things spoken at the some level, for example, and more things spoken at the most level, you can set each punctuation mark for the level you want.  I want none to be spoken at none and that is the default NVDA setting, no punctuation is spoken at none.

You, however, might want certain specific marks spoken at none.

If, on the other hand, you have a punctuation mark set to all, it won't be spoken unless NVDA is set to the all punctuation setting.

When you set a punctuation mark to a certain level, most, for example, it means the punctuation will be spoken at that level and in levels above that.  A most setting means it will be spoken at most or all but not in none or some.

I finally contacted Casey Matthews with Web Friendly Help, and he suggested setting punctuation levels to All and the setting to send change to synthesizer to never. That seems to have solved the problem.

As far as the differences you are discussing, I don't know about that.  But you said that punctuation is spoken in say all even though the level is set to some.  If you are talking about say all, meaning speak to the end of a document, that has nothing to do with the levels such as some, most, etc. that you can set for punctuation marks.

If you set a punctuation mark to be spoken when your punctuation level is set to none, it will be spoken at that setting and in all the other settings.

I tried changing the way NVDA pronounces the exclamation point and the apostrophe. For example, when reading a sentence, it says, "exclamation point" at the end of the sentence. But when I read by character, it still says, "bang" when it gets to the exclamation point.

The articles in In Process don't indicate the way the punctuation levels should be set in the symbols dialogue in order for this to work properly. I've tried different combinations with similar results. I even tried deleting the replacement words from the edit field, but that doesn't solve the problem. I've tried restarting NVDA and resetting it to its default configuration, but that didn't solve the problem. This is driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But did things go back to bang for exclamation mark and tick for apostrophe, only, not a mix?  If not, that's really weird, as going back to complete default configuration for all NVDA settings should have that effect.

It used to be understood that if you published and profited from a mass media platform you should also be responsible for its content. That idea is nowadays considered quaintly archaic. There is no real accountability, and almost limitless ability to post any kind of ridiculous and scurrilous nonsense. God help us.
