question on thunderbird

Richard Kuzma

Not sure where to turn but I have a thunderbird question.

I am creating a distribution list in thunderbird and have the list created.

I am trying to ad members to the list from my existing contact list.

I goodled around and it tells me to drag people to the new distribution list, but obviously cant do that.

My question is this:

Is there a way to do it via keyboard in stead of drag and drop – the regular windows cut and paste keys do not work.

Thanks for understanding my frustration as I am assisting another blind user.

When creating distribution lists, I've found it much easier to list all the email addresses, separated by semicolons, in a text document, then copying and pasting them into the appropriate field in any email program. So, unless someone else has a better answer, you might try that.

That was my next choice and you just confirmed it.

If you use Notepad, as I think about it, the easiest way to do this, including both the name of the person and the address in the proper format, is probably to use autocomplete.  Start a new message.  Type the name or part of the name or the address or part of the address.

You will either be on the right address or you can up and down arrow through the autocomplete suggestions.  Once you are on the one you want, use home to move to the beginning of the line, then shift end to move to the end of the line and select the entire line.  Copy it to the clipboard.  You now have the properly formatted name and address and can paste the entry into Notepad.

I'll add, though I'm not sure if I need to, that after you move to Notepad to paste in an entry, if you want to get another address, return to Thunderbird, select the address you will be on, delete it, and use autocomplete to look for something different.  You don't need to go through the unnecessary work of canceling the opened message and creating a new one to use autocomplete again.

Also, I forgot to say that when you are on the address you want to copy, you can use control a to select it.  I gave a little longer way in my first message.

For those that have questions on Thunderbird in reference to accessibility or "how to" with a screen reader, there exists a pretty active group dedicated to just that:

Thunderbird for Blind Users

Post: thunderbird@groups.io

After the advent of 102.X there has been extensive discussion of the address book in that group.  I would direct your attention there and suggest you join.

I'll also note that this entire conversation has had nothing to do with NVDA in any meaningful sense.  I am begging the membership to launch questions regarding specific pieces of software, Thunderbird being but one, on the Chat Subgroup.  The entire focus of this topic has been about workarounds for the Address Book with Thunderbird and not about NVDA.  It also appears that the address book as currently implemented is accessible to a greater extent than all participants (including myself) were aware, and that's been discussed at length in multiple topics on the previously referenced group.
