ESpeak on iPhone and NVDA

Rajiv Shah

Hello,

I tried unsuccessfully to get ESpeak to work with Hindi, or, for that matter, any other foreign languages. What did you do to get ESpeak to cahnge the language?

Rajiv

Thanks for your response.
But my issue is not that. I get it to work for English.
But when I select Tamil India , which is already added to the Router languages and using the Vani voice, it does not shows the ESpeak voices. ESpeak supports Tamil.
Also, after the recent IOS V16.1.1 I am unable to add any new languages to the ruter. When I select Tamil Sri Lanka or Sinhala Sri Lanka it does nothing, neither adding the language.
I have a 12 Pro with IOS 16.1.1
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ravi.

initially, the volume, influxion, pitch everything will be 0.
Pl increase it using some normal people help.
Then we can configure in accessibility/voice over/speech settings.

yes. espeak app is not compatible with watch yet. Even in samsung
watch, only samsung default synthesiser is working at present.

for me also, vaani stopped working after few days of ios16 update and

that issues was not rectified in further IOS upgradations else.

So, i deleted tamil voice from languages settings in speech and

decided to set espeak as default instead of eloquants.

So, Espeak reads both english and tamil effectively and lekha switches

whenever hindi text is found now.

I have decided to leave eloquants at present to read english and tamil

messages.

English alone, i am not comfortable with espeak which i am trying to

practice and overcome.

In android, i am able to set eloquants for english and espeak for

tamil using auto TTS setting.

in windows pc, i am able to do the same using the dual voice NVDA add on.

In ios alone, i am unable to find a way for this auto-switch

synthesiser between eloquants and espeak and waiting for a solution.

And here is documentation that Eloquence is used.  The snippet stops in the middle of a longer sentence but it documents what I said.
https://www.speechtechmag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=34109

The menu provided allows the user to change the speed and The NFB selected SpeechWorks' ETI-Eloquence TTS software, as the technology supports multiple languages, high-speed reading and responsive speech capabilities

And as I have asked before, are you talking about American Eloquence or the British Eloquence.  I don't recall your answer.  British Eloquence doesn't sound good and has a phony British accent, presumably because it was programmed by Americans who used their idea of an English accent.  Clearly, they weren't specialists in British speech nor native born British speakers.

The American version of Eloquence, if you use Reed, has a certain amount of roughness to it, but it isn't muffled, as you describe and if you read at faster speeds, the effects of the roughness are heard far less.

You can setup the voice by changing its pitch, inflexion and reading
speed and pauses. I feel it is like NVDA e-speak only.

I really don't like Espeak as a synthe. However, any new voices
synthes we can get for our iPhones is great. When the full version is
released, I will try it for sure. I have been using eloquence on my
computers for years.

This is an interesting question. If Paul is the one I'm thinking of,
it's the same voice that NFB Newsline uses. I would prefer that voice
over the ones we have now.

I just got the latest ESpeak-ng for iPhone, or the one that is in the

soon?
The ESpeak ng for iPhone has a lot of new variants like the Read voice,
Paul, and others. Or maybe it just sounds better on my iPhone because it
has
better speakers? Not sure but I like ESpeak for iPhone. I wish the sapi5
espeak were just as good as the one that is in NVDA but I guess we can't
have everything.

I use it off and on and I used it a few weeks ago.  It definitely, without doubt, uses Eloquence.  A long time ago, it used DecTalk but that hasn't been the case for a very long time.
