Portable copy of NVDA not working

Akshaya Choudhary

Hello everyone,

I keep a portable copy  of the latest version of NVDA on my computer. I only use it occasionally, as I use an older version installed on my pc, NVDA 19.3, for my everyday use.  Unfortunately, the portable copy of the latest version  is not launching today. It was working fine till few days back, so I guess it's not an issue of updates. Could someone help me with this?
It does make the initial NVDA launch sound on trying to start the portable version, but nothing happens after that. The version never launches.

Have you restarted the PC lately?  That's always worth a try.
Also, could you have set the synthesizer to "no speech" or the output device to something which doesn't currently exist?

Failing all that, could you send a copy of your NVDA log to info@... with a description please?  You should find it in your %temp% folder.

Kind regards

Quentin.

If you manually close the main copy, then open the portable one, does that also not work?
I had the odd issue where the normal installed version was silent. This seems to have been due to a longer than normal boot up, resulting in the installed copy thinking there was no audio interface and setting it to no speech. I've never seen this occur on portable copies after the machine is fully booted though, especially if its been working with a previous version.
I would make sure though that any usb devices are not acting up and are properly initialising, as this can cause some strange behaviour.

Hello Quentin, thank you for responding. I'm partially sighted and i don't see any NVDA dialogue or activity on the desktop after attempting to launch the portable copy.
Could you instruct me on how to send "NVDA log"? I will be happy to do so.

Hello Brian, manually closing the installed copy and then launching the portable copy is also not working.

To send the logs navigate to %temp% in the run dialogue and look for something about nvda log or old appended to that.

Good luck.

Remember that it would be the log files of the portable copy that are wanted here.

Before I'd start dealing with this I'd download the latest NVDA installer and make a new portable copy first.  If that misbehaves in the same way, it's a useful data point, and if it doesn't the problem is solved.  It's the portable equivalent of the old "uninstall reinstall" technique for installed versions.

Akshaya, you don't tell us what version of Windows your PC operates
on. There is clearly a reason why you're using an older version of
NVDA for your work, and it could be that recent changes implemented by
NVDA are not supported by your setup.

This is not a question of the program not being able to run.  You can run the newest NVDA in Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

Hello everyone,

After launching %temp%  I can see NVDA log and NVDA old log, which one I'm required to send?
I also downloaded the latest installer from the NVDA website and made a portable copy, as advised by Brian. This new portable copy is working fine. Now, how can I rescue my old portable copy with this? I have my preferred settings and add-ons in the old one.
Also, to clarify, I'm using Windows 10.

Really appreciate all the suggestions,
Regards,
Akshaya

I don’t think you will be able to rescue the portable copy, unless you copy the add ons from the old to the new and hope it works. I would just do my settings from scratch or create a portable from the installed copy of nvda.

You will send him the old log as that  is the log when nvda restarted, that is the log prior to the restart.

I would think there would be a file that has many or perhaps all of the settings stored, such as an ini file.  As far as add-ons are concerned, since you can't run the other copy, I have no idea if you can move them or their settings.

I would imagine at least one person who knows a lot technically about NVDA will discuss such questions further.

Since you will be setting up a portable copy, once it is set up with the settings and add-ons you want, make a backup.  The copy that isn't working appears to have become corrupted.  If you keep a backup, you can simply delete the bad copy and copy the backup folder to the place where you run the program from.

All user configuration is stored under the NVDA Portable folder, wherever you chose to create it, in a folder named userConfig.  That includes Add-Ons, Profiles, dictionaries, etc.   That is provided you told NVDA to include user configuration profiles when you created the portable copy.  I'd imagine that the add-ons, etc., will be there if they were there for the installed version from which the portable copy was created.

So, if you still have an old portable copy (which compatible add-ons, etc.) and provided that it wasn't something under userConfig that is the source of corruption, you should be able to copy that folder over lock, stock, and barrel to a freshly created portable copy that does not have it.

nvda.log is the file for the currently running - or most recently run instance of NVDA
nvda-old.log is the file for the previous instance of NVDA prior to that.

Wherever you run NVDA from - whether the installed copy, or a portable copy (or temporary copy from the downloaded launcher) - the log will be written to %temp%.  So if you run a portable copy, exit it (or it crashes) and then start an installed copy, in your %temp% folder, nvda.log will be for the currently running (installed) instance, and nvda-old.log will be from the previous run (the portable copy in this case).

Issue resolved!
I replaced "user config" folder of the new portable copy with that of my old portable copy, which had my preferred settings and add-ons. Now, this new copy is working fine with my old settings and add-ons. I guess it was an issue of my old portable copy being corrupted for some reason. Thank you Brian, and everyone! I also learnt some very useful new things about NVDA.

One last thing. Since, I can remove my old portable copy now, should I uninstall it or just delete the entire folder?

You can't uninstall a portable copy, since it was never installed. It is self-contained, which is what makes it portable. Delete its folder.

Consider Gene's advice about keeping a periodic backup of your working portable copy, so you can easily restore it if something goes wrong. It seems you rely on it heavily.

Speaking of that, inquiring minds do want to know why you run 2019.3? There was nothing special about 2019.3, that I know of, except that it was the first version to use Python3. However since it does, there shouldn't be any reason not to run a newer version that also supports Python 3, such as 2020.4, or 2022.X.

You can't uninstall a portable copy of a program.  That's the whole point of a portable program.  You can move it anywhere and run it from things like removable drives.  The files are on your machine and the program runs but nothing is changed or installed on the machie.  Delete the folder containing the program and it will be completely gone.
