speaking words phonetically

Betsy Grenevitch

For some reason my notes do not make sense. How do I spell a word phonetically in an email? I am using a regular keyboard layout.

I have the cursor on the beginning of the word. Thank you for any help.

Press Numpad 5 three times and you'll hear phonetic spelling of the current word on the third press.

I do not know why it is not working for me but it is silent. Do I have to push another key with the number five?

You might want to consider trying the Enhanced Phonetic Reading (dev version) Add-On.

You probably unlinked your cursors.
To fix that, go into the NVDA menu, Preferences, Settings, Review Cursor.
Make sure Follow system focus and Follow System Caret are checked. Once they are, try again.

It has not been updated for my version of NVDA so I guess I do not have to learn it after all.

To make sure everything is working as it should - might be best to restart PC as well if not - turn on keyboard input help, with NVDA key + number row 1, and when you then press numpad 5, it should say something like the following - unless it's not picking up keyboard input properly:

Speaks the word of the current navigator object where the review cursor is situated. Pressing twice spells the word. Pressing three times spells the word using character descriptions

The dev version has been tested through version 2022.x

Hence the reason I specified that the dev version must be used if you're using the current version of NVDA, which I presume all users are unless they explicitly state otherwise.  If an add-on has been tested with the major release number, it remains compatible with all later dot releases for that major release number.

One more thing then - make sure you are in object review mode, if working with GUI elements, or document review mode if working with e-mail or web-page contents, to start off with - just in case - and, NVDA key + numpad 1 and 7 will switch between different modes, but, would focus on something like the desktop - windows key + D or windows key + M, and then make sure you are in object review mode, and, say this since just sounds like you might not be have object navigation focused on what you are reading - this is also why suggest maybe restarting PC, and see if odd behaviour continues.

Tyler, thank you so much. Thank you all for your patience. I want to keep using the computer as long as I can with my dementia. I just learned a little over a month ago that my dementia is due to a rare disease called Moyamoya. I am facing a couple of brain surgeries because of this rare disease. Again thank you all for you patience with me.

It sounds to me as though you have set the navigator not to follow where you are working.  You should change this setting because you will have no end of trouble if you don't.  In review cursor settings check the check box that says Follow system focus.

Hi

Which version of nvda do you have? Is it the latest? NVDA 2022.3?

When NVDA is running press the nvda key + letter N. When the preferences menu comes up arrow to settings then go into it.

You will be given a list of categories locate the speech one then tab into it and locate the following called Delayed descriptions for characters on cursor movement and check that box.

Save your settings.

Now when in a email if you use the say left or right arrow keys while on a letter it will say the follow if on the letter A for example alpha or letter B it will be bravo.

hope it helps.

Hi

The previous way was just doing it with the arrow keys to see what the word was if the cursor was at the start of that word.

The other wayis make sure you are in review mode use the nvda key + 7 on the numeric key pad to change to this mode hopefully you will hear it spoken.

Make sure nu mlock is key is off You should hear it spoken by nvda.

If you just want to review the wordnumber 4 of the numeric key pad will do previous word. 5 will do current word and 6 will do next word.

When you found the word you want hit the number 5 on the numeric key pad 3 times and it will be spoken out hat way for example the word for will be foxtrot oscar romeo.

You can also do the same in object navigation mode but instead of the nvda key + 7 on the numberic keypad  it will then be nvda key + 1.

See  which way  works for you.

Hi Betsy

Gene is correct about tracking review cursor but you can toggle this setting using NVDA+NumRow 6.

Cheers
