clickable versus link
Don H
What is the difference between something on a web page that NVDA says is clickable and something on the web page that NVDA says is a link?
Thanks |
|
Not much in today's world. I know that answer is quite vague, however a clickable can take you to another page as well as a link, it's just the way the code is written. A clickable as well as a link can even modify the page you are on thereby not taking you to the next page but leaving you on the same one.

Hello X,
A Link is an element, that leads You somewhere. A Button is an element, that starts a function. A Clickable is an element, that does something. So a clickable is always the result of being lazy. Just like not writing his name under an email ;-) Best regards Yeti |

Yes, but a button can lead you to another page; a clickable can do the same, a link can activate something on the same page, or not. It all can get very confusing, and do not get me started on links that are buttons

And buttons which are links. And with that I’m off to untie my head. Lol! -----Original Message-----

a button can lead you to another page;Of course you can hammer in a nail with pliers. But if you want to use a symbol for driving a nail in a manual, you should use a hammer. So a link should be the hint, that clicking leads You to another position. And a button should be the hint, that You start (or finish) something with it. Ad Astra Yeti |

A button doesn't necessarily start or finish something on a web page. It is increasingly common for buttons to expand and collapse information on a web page. This is done so that web pages will fit better on mobile devices. While you can give more or less approximations of what links and controls generally do, context and common sense as well as what you hear announced is the only way to be sure at times of what something does.

Brian's Mail list account
I think I asked this in another thread not far back, and really it turns out to be an alternate way to get a specific area to be detected and do something useful, often the choice depends on the whims of the page author. Brian

Sometimes "clickable" doesn't really do anything. Maybe there is something visual going on like the highlighting of text markeda s clickable, but for all intents and purposes it's useless. There was a whiel there where all review text on IMDB seemed to be designated as clickable. Anyway, one should just try it if a certain result is expected, and there doesn'ta ppear to be a standard link.

Do you hear this with other screen-readers? Years ago, NVDA said clickable often when it shouldn't. It was clutter, though aside from that it didn't do any harm.
