I have been using Windows 11 since January of this year. I can report no noticeable accessibility challenges with screen readers and I honestly see no reason for why blind users should avoid this operating system.

Hi Group,

The only issue I have with Windows 11 and NVDA is the way the system tray is presented. By default, there is some sort of over flow restriction on the tray and to see all the items, you click on the 'show hidden icons' item on the system tray.  Someone gave instructions as to how to change this under settings and either i did it wrong or the instructions weren't clear enough for me to follow or both <laugh>.

Since I've been on the list long before Windows 11 and I've seen no discussions about accessibility issues regarding Windows 11, it is a good assumption that there are none.

I don't know anything about your knowledge of Windows in general and, regardless of version, you should have Windows set to show file types.  It is set not to by default.

Hi  Gene: Where do you go to have Windows show all file types?  I know its something  I don’t often do. If I ever end up with a new machine with windows 11 in it. I should know where it is. Thanks.

I would think this would work for Windows 11.  I have Windows 10 and it works here.
Open the start menu.  Type file explorer options and press enter.
You are in a dialog.
Shift tab once and right arrow to view.
Tab to Advanced Settings.
Start down arrowing and you will see a lot of settings.
When you get to hide extensions for known file types, uncheck it with the space bar.
Tab to and activate the OK button.
You will now see extensions.

Hi,

To toggle show/hide file types (or what's called a file extension), open Start menu, search for "file explorer options" (without quotes), open File explorer options (if shown), press Control+Tab to go to View page, press Tab to go to Advanced settings, arrow through the list of options and press Space when you see "hide file extensions" to toggle it off. Click OK, and file extensions will be shown.

Overall answers:

  • Is Windows 11 usable with NVDA: yes, much better than 2021 and early 2022.
  • What is the minimum NVDA version needed to use Windows 11: NVDA 2021.3 or later will work, but more recent releases will provide better experience. For best results, use NVDA 2022.2 or later, and future NVDA releases will include improved support for Windows 11 features (upcoming NVDA 2023.1 includes ability to announce search highlights from Start menu).
  • What's the learning curve like: if you are coming from Windows 10, most features will work as before (some apps such as Settings app was reorganized) and the learning curve will be minimal. You can still search for things form Start menu, File Explorer (formerly Windows Explorer) is still there with enhancements added in 2022, emoji panel is still there, Chromium Edge and other web browsers will work, Microsoft Store apps have been updated, among other things. Keep the system requirements in mind, however - you can assume that computers produced on or after 2018 will run Windows 11; it is possible to install Windows 11 on older systems if you go through the clean install method although this means future updates are not guaranteed.
  • Do I need to keep NVDA up to date while using Windows 11: yes, more so if you are using Version 22H2 (2022 Update) as Microsoft will add things and make changes multiple times a year; some are subtle while others are noticeable. The first such update, dubbed "Moment 1", came out in October 2022, and the next one, "Moment 2," is scheduled for early 2023. Moment 1 brought suggested actions and tabbed File Explorer, and Moment 2 will change the look and feel of taskbar and system tray on tablets and other touch-capable devices.

Cheers,

Joseph

You every once in a while, have to go to settings / personalization / taskbar / system Korner overflow and check the ones that are disabled, enable them and the overflow disappears. I now have about 40 thing sin tghere not at once, only when programs launch. So it’s not really that bad.

I'll add that one reason I like the other system is it uses the start menu search, which I think is very important for people to become aware of as a convenient and versatile way of finding things.
