updating over rdp
Darren Tomblin
hi, i'm having a problem updating nvda on a computer I have over rdp everytime I try to update it it keeps saying that a ffile is in use and to close another copy of nvda that is running. however the only copy that is running is the remote computer because I switch to either narrator or jaws when I try to do this. does anyone know what i'm doing wrong. thanks

Hi, This is typically caused by parts of NVDA being stuck inside an application or two (typically remote DLL's getting stuck inside File Explorer or somewhere). This can also be caused if NVDA is told to start from secure screens, and on systems serving as Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) host, up to two copies of NVDA can be running at once: one from session 0 (noninteractive session) used to log onto an interactive session (session 1 and beyond), and the actual session the remote user is logged onto (Windows releases from Vista onwards do run multiple sessions or a collection of programs and system environment at once; the first, session 0, is a noninteractive session used to log onto user accounts; the second session, session 1 and beyond, is the actual session the user is logged onto at the moment; this became a basis for the user experience seen if fast startup is enabled on newer Windows releases). Cheers, Jsoep |

Hi Joseph Thanks for this explanation I think this explains why we can't do nvda updates using RDP anymore... This used to be possible but hasn't been for some time now If we can figure in vda to not start up automatically on the remote computer with this be possible? Otherwise I have to physically be in front of the remote computer and do it from the main console Russ On Mon, Jan 2, 2023, 7:24 AM Joseph Lee <joseph.lee22590@...> wrote:

Hi, Specifically, turn off "Use NVDA during sign-in (requires administrator privileges)" checkbox from general settings panel if running NVDA releases earlier than 2022.3.3. Cheers, Joseph |

While Fast Startup can really make boot (and it's not really boot, exactly, it's a wake from special hibernation) times much faster on HDD-based hardware, it does very little indeed on SSD-based hardware. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit "Be Yourself" is the worst advice you can give to some people. ~ Tom Masson |

Hi Dale, I didn't see any content in your message... Hi Joseph, You are so good! :-) Your understanding and suggestion was spot on! I had always suspected something like that was going on... When that change came about I didn't think to change that setting. :-( I was sure I was the only one using NVDA on those specific remote computers. Thank you, I just updated another remote computer using that setting change. Russ On Mon, Jan 2, 2023 at 12:26 PM Dale Leavens <dleavens@...> wrote:

Hi Steve, I'm pleased to report that the suggestion from Joseph works great! I've used it on multiple computers already! From Joseph: Specifically, turn off "Use NVDA during sign-in (requires administrator privileges)" checkbox from general settings panel if running NVDA releases earlier than 2022.3.3.
