Setting Up a Focus 40 (4th Gen) Braille Display to work with NVDA

Madison Martin

Hi all,

I just downloaded NVDA; how do I get my 4th generation Focus 40 to work with it? I know how to do it using JAWS but I’ve never done it with NVDA; I can’t imagine not using a display so really want to know how to do this.
Thanks,

Madison

Every NVDA user needs to know how to do two basic things when almost any question arises.  The one you want really depends on the exact nature of the question:

1.        Bring up the NVDA Commands Quick Reference:  NVDA + N, H, Q  [NVDA Menu, Help, Commands Quick Reference]

2.      Bring up the NVDA User Guide:  NVDA + N, H, U   [NVDA Menu, Help, User Guide]

In this case, bring up the User Guide and have a look at Section 12.1.6.

My guess is that if this Braille display has already been in use on the computer in question, even if using JAWS, that the drivers for it already exist on that machine.  Probably just following the instructions for the "Automatic" choice should allow NVDA to find and configure it.

It is much easier to be critical than to be correct.

It appears that Freedom Scientific builds in a driver for this device in JAWS itself.  But, they also have a page that supplies an installer for all of the Focus Series Braille displays if another Windows-based screen reader is in use:  Focus Blue driver download

If you are using a Braille Display (or any device, really) that has never been used on a given computer before it is better to run the driver installer prior to connecting it to the machine for the first time (whether by wire or wirelessly).
