Preview and an add-on maintenance announcement: version 23.02 add-on release schedule and features, Explorer Enhancements is now part of Windows App Essentials

Hi all,

I am about to enter my lab to prepare version 23.02 of my add-ons. As announced previously, these add-ons will require NVDA 2022.4 or later, and for all add-ons except Add-on Updater, Windows 10 21H2 or later. The first release wave (Add-on Updater and Windows App Essentials) will happen next Monday (30th) while remaining add-ons will be released around February 3rd or when NVDA 2023.1 beta 1 is released, whichever happens earlier.

Preview of 23.02 releases:

  • See above for NVDA and Windows requirements.
  • Add-on Updater: a major issue with the add-on was resolved in relation to add-on update checks. To let you taste the bug fix in action, Add-on Updater 23.02 will be released ahead of other add-ons with the download link.
  • Windows App Essentials: 23.02 brings many changes designed for both Windows 10 and 11. While most changes are enhancements to File Explorer and taskbar, it prepares NVDA to support exciting new features being tested by Windows Insiders, including tabbed Notepad. The new release will go out a few minutes after Add-on Updater 23.02.

Second announcement: I hereby inform NVDA community that Explorer Enhancements add-on from Javi Dominguez is officially declared abandoned, with Windows App Essentials incorporating features from the now abandoned add-on. Explorer Enhancements brought a bug fix: NVDA will announce “this folder is empty” if you do open an empty folder in File Explorer, and this change will be part of Windows App Essentials 23.02 (Javi did say on the NVDA add-ons list about the abandonment of Explorer Enhancements add-on).

Cheers,

Joseph

Can one still get the windows explorer add on, and is there any benefit to having it on legacy windows? As one machine will still have to run 7, I thought i'd best get a working copy of useful add ons before we go Windows 10 with nvda.

Hi,

Explorer Enhancements might work on older Windows releases, but things might be different and we cannot guarantee that it wil work properly (the add-on relies on UIA a lot, and Windows 7 is known for shipping with some broken UIA implementations and issues with Windows Explorer). Note that as for the policy I announced last year, any add-on I maintain will require Windows 10 or later (Add-on Updater is an exception).

Cheers,

Joseph
