De-Muting Automatically when NVDA starts - Is this a new (or new-ish) feature?
I have only recently noticed that if I have my sound muted, if I fire up NVDA it de-mutes the sound as part of its startup.
This actually makes perfect sense, but I have (or at least I think I have) often in the past fired up NVDA when I have sound muted when I don't want to disturb my partner and can tell what I'm doing just by watching. I do not recall it having automatically re-enabled sound. It could be that I had just been pretty consistently firing up NVDA first and then immediately muting the computer, which still works. But I figure someone will know if this is something recently introduced, or has been there forever and I've just changed my habits such that I'm encountering it now. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit It is much easier to be critical than to be correct. ~ Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-1881 |

I don't recall the name of the add-on we were talking about a number
of days ago, but one of the things it does is to unmute audio during
boot up. It also raises the volume during boot up if it is much too
low.

I'll have to look at my Add-On list later, but I haven't added in much (or, perhaps, anything) really recently. But if someone can identify the Add-On that does this, I can certainly double check to see if it's installed and enabled. This could account for the change, as I do throw add-ons into the mix sometimes when I need to play with one for a given topic.

Hi. I believe it's the NVDA global commands extension add-on that could possibly be causing this behaviour. Very best wishes, Mo.

Mobeen,
That's probably the culprit, as I did add that one most recently. It's not that the behavior is a problem, it's just different than what I had recalled being "the default behavior" for a very long time.

Unmute add-on- Definitely do not have that one. I didn't even know such existed. It was a feature which was asked for a lot, and I seem to recall the was an add on first.

I've had little problems from it, but sometimes I still get a silent start up but that is normally due to a late initialisation of the sound hardware and nvda shows that there is no sound hardware found then, so it can hardly enable it! I recently found the culprit for this on all windows flavours is a malfunctioning usb device causing a boot up delay of drivers, since even a ram stick needs a driver, so if one fails and you have several plugged in that is normally the problem. It does mean of course that as long as speakers are on and plugged in, NVDA will unmute the computer and set the volume sensibly. Brian -- bglists@... I'm sure I saw a discussion quite some time ago about putting this into nvda as standard though I have to say, i never saw the actual decision on this. Personally, I think its a good idea and one could always have an item on the start up menu to enable or disable it on a given installation.
