Add-on Updater 23.04.1, NV Access add-on store broadly available via Add-on Updater #addonrelease

Hi all,

Add-on Updater 23.04.1 is now available. This release can be fetched if you switch to NV Access add-on store update source, which, by the way, is no longer an experimental update source as seen by Add-on Updater. In other words, it is okay to check for add-on updates using add-on store update source. The now legacy community add-ons website update source (website is still going strong) will continue to be updated for some time.

Also, if you would like to get Add-on Updater 23.04.1 manually (perhaps you didn’t get a chance to install Add-on Updater version compatible with NVDA 2023.1), you can do so from this link:

https://github.com/josephsl/addonUpdater/releases/download/23.04/addonUpdater-23.04.1.nvda-addon

Some frequently asked questions:

Q. Which NVDA version does Add-on Updater support?

Add-on Updater supports NVDA 2022.4 or later.

Q. What is this NV Access add-on store you are talking about?

NV Access is introducing a new way to submit and distribute add-on information in one place. This is part of a plan to bring add-on update check functionality to NVDA screen reader directly.

Q. How do I change add-on update source?

With Add-on Updater installed, go to NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings, select Add-on Updater, then go to add-on update source list. Select the desired update source, select OK, and say yes when prompted.

Community add-ons website is the default add-on update source at this time, with plans to change this to NV Access add-on store in the future.

Q. Will the community add-ons update source be updated?

Yes, community add-ons website update source will be updated for some time.

Ok, how does one switch to the add-on store as the source for add-ons?  I just dug through everything I can find in the settings and can't find any way to specify the source.

thanks.

how do I go about getting 2022.4? I did the internal update to 2023.1 and everything of yours and the remote addon stopped working. i performed a system restore and had to reinstall NVDA but all the ones on my pc were too old. I found 2022.3 on-line which helped with the remote but not your addons.

Never mind,  I figured out that you have to have the add-on installed in order to change the source.  I had deleted it when it was announced that it wasn't compatible with what I had.

Also will the new Store within "Add-On Updater" you're mentioning, work with previous version of NVDA, for those who haven't updated yet?

Hi,

Answering severla questions at once:

  1. Changing add-on update source: you must be using Add-on Updater to change add-on update source.
  2. Add-on Updater not working with NVDA 2023.1: you might be using Add-on Updater 23.02 or earlier. Add-on Updater 23.02.1 is the first version compatible with NVDA 2023.1.
  3. NVDA 2022.4 download link: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/nvda/releases/2022.4/nvda_2022.4.exe
  4. Add-on store and older NVDA releases: for NVDA releases without add-on store client built in (client coming in the future), Add-on Updater serves as the add-on store client.

My advice at this point: please install Add-on Updater, as folks did find updates to add-ons that they were not aware of after installing this add-on (reported in the past). This is why I provided Add-on Updater 23.04.1 download link for a situation such as the one Robert describes where Add-on Updater appears incompatible with just released NVDA 2023.1 when in fact newer add-on releases are compatible.

Cheers,

Joseph

Via NVDA Preferences, Settings, Add-On Updater Pane, Add-On Update Source dropdown at the bottom of the pane.

There are a number of NVDA Add-Ons that, once installed, have settings panes that are added to the collection of NVDA settings panes.  Add-On Updater is among those.

Since I have a new windows installation and my NVDA 2023.1 has no add-ons at all at this point, I tried to get the manual download that Joseph mentioned in his message with a direct link. I was hoping to be able to get to the add ons store that way to find up to date addons. That seems to be the only way to get to that source, right? So after downloading the add-on, which FireFox put into the downloads folder, I pressed enter on it and I got an error message saying I must be running NVDA to install the add-on. Well, I AM running nvda, so what do I have to do now?

Hi,

Try:

  1. Restart your computer, then try installing Add-on Updater.
  2. Open NVDA menu/Tools/Manage add-ons, select Install, navigate to downloads folder, select Add-on Updater package, and NVDA will install the add-on (if everything goes well).

Add-on Updater is not the add-on store client that will let you browse available add-ons, but will look for updates for add-ons you've got if updates are available from add-on store.

Ok, so can you please tell me how I can access the add on store to get the up to date things?

Go into NVDA’s settings via NVDA+n/Options. enter on Options and you’ll see a whole bunch of items in a list. Near the bottom you’ll see “NVDA Updater”. Tab through, and one of the options is to change the channel, which will be a Combo Box.alt+arrow down to get into it, and select the Store. After which tab to OK, and it’ll bring up a dialogue alerting you that you’ve switched over to the Store channel; if you’re sure of this change. Good luck!
