adjustable pauses

Is there a way to adjust how long a synthesizer pauses after certain punctuation marks?

Pauses seem to be relative to each other and the speed, from what I can tell, so it may well be under the control of the synth, not nvda, but there might be some way around that on some synths, I've not gone into that. Much more annoying can be when something in the voice puts in a gap, where there should not be one. All Synths seem to do this, and the only thing I can find is that its sometimes on pages where text is wrapped around a picture, one supposes making line length change all the time.

I've noticed that the Windows Onecore voices pause most of the time after punctuation. They seem to know when it's appropriate to pause after a punctuation mark. For example, when I write that I live in Sheridan, Wyoming, although I put a comma after "Sheridan," it doesn't pause there before saying "Wyoming," which is appropriate.

I've used the Code Factory Vocalizer voices, which don't do this. They have separate settings in the NVDA menu under Code Factory then Vocalizer. Once you open that, you need to press Control plus Tab to get to that screen. There might be a setting for pauses after punctuation, but I haven't looked. I hope this is helpful to anyone interested in this topic.

I haven't investigated the question but I suspect that if it can be done, the method varies from synthesizer to synthesizer and I don't know if all synthesizers let you adjust this.

What synthesizer or synthesizers do you want to know about?

I wonder if this could be done using the dictionary and variable numbers of space characters in the "what you hear"

No.  You would be telling NVDA to regard the punctuation mark in the pattern field as a number of spaces.  It would have no effect on the pause rate, it is strictly for pronunciation, and you wouldn't hear the punctuation mark announced if you had the punctuation level set high enough to announce it normally.  For example, you wouldn't hear anything spoken for period if you set punctuation high enough that it would normally be announced.

I don't have any technical info on what is possible or not - but to get the query in front of those who do, the best place is a GitHub issue.  I couldn't find one for adjusting the rate of pauses for punctuation, so it would certainly be worth someone creating one (or someone better at searching than me to find one if there already is one).

On a slightly related note, I did find:

Adjusting how long the voice pauses between lines, sentence and paragraphs during Say All: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4944

And there are several requesting the ability to change pauses in between different elements, such as:
Pausing between cell contents and address in Excel: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3736

Pausing between formatting elements: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/3283

Yes, that seems not to work at all on Espeak, but occasionally a line feed in a strange place does, and this affects some Microsoft voices more than others. No I don't understand it either!
