I was doing email and all of a sudden the woman voice I had with NVDA started getting sluggish and I can no longetr get NVDA to work. I had to switch to Narrator to get any voice on the laptop except the set-up voice. Any idea what could have happened. I am using the latest NVDA. I have enrestarted the laptop more than once. i thought at first something was wrong with the laptop but it looks like it was NVDA. It would let me put in my password to start the computer

Brian's Mail list account
Hmm, I've not had the sluggish issue, but have had it stop working due to the computer doing something in the background, and loading its audio drivers too late for nvda to see them. It then selects no audio and if you close it, will be like that till you change it back. This often happens if a windows update or back up is happening while you are doing other things. This is why I always keep a portable copy on my desktop as a shortcut. Then running that usually means it works and then you can go in and see what is happening in the .ini file of the installed version. Obviously, if the portable copy is just a copy of the working one, there is no reason not to over install it and keep the portables settings which normally restores things back to how they were. If that fails, then I'm out of ideas. Brian

As far as I know I do not have a portable copy on the laptop. Even if I did I would not be able to find it since I do not have speech except I could get Narrator but I tried it last night and it totally works differently so I cannot figure out how to use it, either.

Does NVDA run properly for awhile then slow down? If you use the
command control alt n when this happens, does NVDA restart and run
properly?
If it doesn't, if you reboot does it run properly again?

From this message, it appears NVDA doesn't work properly after you
reboot. Are you using the same voice with NVDA as with Narrator?
We don't yet know if the problem is with the voice being used or
with NVDA.

Thanks for your suggestions Brian and Gene. My daughter looked at
it this morning and discovered that somehow the speech got turned
off. I am not sure if that was totally the whole thing as it
started being sluggish when I was writing an email. Is there a
shortcut for turning speech off and on in case I accidentally hit
it so I can try that if this happens again?
Thanks to both of you.

Since I don't know what command was used, my guess is that NVDA key
s was used. If you loose speech, use that command and see what
happens. You will hear speech mode beeps and speech mode talk if
speech has been turned off in that way. There are three things you
will hear as you repeatedly issue the command. Speech mode off,
speech mode beeps and speech mode talk.
You may want to change a setting in NVDA so settings changes aren't
automatically saved when the program exits. I've said before, I
think I even submitted a ticket about this, that this is a very bad
default setting.
Your case is an illustration. If settings weren't automatically
saved, when you restarted NVDA or rebooted, you would have had
speech right away because the accidental speech off setting wouldn't
have been saved and the speech on setting would have been used.
I'll tell you how to change the automatically save settings changes
setting if you wish.

Here is how to stop settings from being saved on exit.
Open the general settings dialog with the command control NVDA key
g.
Tab to a field that says, Save configuration when exiting NVDA.
You may only have to tab once.
This is a check box. Uncheck it with the space bar.
Then press enter.
The setting has been changed.
Now, use the command control NVDA key c. You will hear
configuration saved, if things work properly. You have just saved
the settings change you made.
Now, if you ever change a setting and you want it to be saved, use
control NVDA key c after you change the setting. If you want to
change a setting to see if you like it and decide you don't want to
keep it, don't issue the command. The setting won't be saved and
will no longer be used if you restart NVDA.
You can also issue the command control NVDA key r to revert to the
previous settings and get rid of the change without restarting
NVDA. They now will both do exactly the same thing as far as
reverting settings are concerned.

You may want to change a setting in NVDA so settings changes
aren't automatically saved when the program exits. I've
said before, I think I even submitted a ticket about this,
that this is a very bad default setting.
Your case is an illustration. If settings weren't
automatically saved, when you restarted NVDA or rebooted,
you would have had speech right away because the accidental
speech off setting wouldn't have been saved and the speech

I'll tell you how to change the automatically save settings

Hmm, I've not had the sluggish issue, but have had it stop working due to
the computer doing something in the background, and loading its audio
drivers too late for nvda to see them. It then selects no audio and if you
close it, will be like that till you change it back. This often happens if a
windows update or back up is happening while you are doing other things.
This is why I always keep a portable copy on my desktop as a shortcut. Then
running that usually means it works and then you can go in and see what is
happening in the .ini file of the installed version. Obviously, if the
portable copy is just a copy of the working one, there is no reason not to
over install it and keep the portables settings which normally restores
things back to how they were. If that fails, then I'm out of ideas.

Obviously you would need to set up a portable version with a shortcut and define a key for it. Its a very good insurance policy. Actually, Narrator is not that different to nvda but to me at least seems sluggish and limited, but can get one out of trouble. Brian

In any case, I'd have thought this would be the first thing to try, and if nvda thinks there is no audio device as in my scenario, it will not help. It would obviously mean that Narrator saw the driver, but not nvda and this does happen from time to time to me. Its normally when windows is sluggish due to maybe finishing an update. Brian

In any case,
I'd have thought this would be the first thing to try, and if nvda
thinks there is no audio device as in my scenario, it will not
help. It would obviously mean that Narrator saw the driver, but
not nvda and this does happen from time to time to me.
Its normally when windows is sluggish due to maybe finishing an
update.

Gene, you said the corrct thing. It was someone else who mentioned "control". I went back to my notes I took from your email and it did not have "control" in it.

No, nvda plus s, not nvda control s, at least in laptop mode.

NVDA+Control+s is a three-way toggle between speech, beeps or silencing NVDA. Gera Enviado desde mi iPhone SE (2nd Generation) de Telcel

Thanks for your suggestions Brian and Gene. My daughter looked at it this morning and discovered that somehow the speech got turned off. I am not sure if that was totally the whole thing as it started being sluggish when I was writing an email. Is there a shortcut for turning speech off and on in case I accidentally hit it so I can try that if this happens again?
Thanks to both of you.

Even if I did I would not be able to find it since I do not have speech except I could get Narrator but I tried it last night and it totally works differently so I cannot figure out how to use it, either.

Brian
