Anyone found the new nvda stops some programs from loading?
Brian's Mail list account
I took the plunge and installed the latest nvda today, but after a restart of Windows 7 on that machine anyway, several desktop shortcuts did not work, and in on case it said something like ohook.dll was missing, try reinstalling the program.
I tried the tool in nvda, but that made no difference to these weird effects, neither did making the registry files back to yesterday. In the end a system restore fixed it, so I'm guessing some paths to bits of windows had become corrupted and moving it all back fixed it. I'll have to do a back up while its working. Just wondered if the fixing tool might have changed from the previous nvda version and can sometimes fiddle with something it should not? Cannot see it myself as if it had been just the registry, then the registry restore would have fixed it. I don't know what this ohook.dll or similar does, so cannot comment further. Hi Brian UK,
what were you trying to start, a programme name would have been good as an example. Regards, Nermin |

Well, I had in the end to put my machine back a couple of days, and then reinstall the programs, and add ons.

I'm still not sure what caused it, but it only affected things which had been installed or had shortcuts to them edited in the last day. As often is the case in Windows when it loses its way, one may never know the culprit, but thank goodness for backups. Brian -- bglists@... Well at the time it would not run certain exe files like any of the portable versions of nvda, and indeed the updated add ons from the day before and on the installed version kicked up illogical errors.

I suspect some registry corruption, maybe due to something outside of my control, like a mains glitch during writing the updated registry. Having got the missing file warning, it was something like o-hook.dll not found in some applications, I put the machine back a day, then redid all the changes I'd made in between, including reinstalling and making the new and portable nvdas, then everything worked. It was obviously not nvda, as narrator would not run anything, and attempting to shut down windows by menus also failed. As I say thank goodness for restore points and backups on other drives. There is not any way to know when this sort of thing can occur. You immediately suspect the last thing you did, but its not always the case. Brian -- bglists@...
