character count countdown with edit box
Don H
I come accross some web pages where there is a edit box that has a number of characters limitation. While typing in these edit boxes the character count is voiced. For example it will say 32 characters 500 remaining. Is there some setting in nvda to stop this character count announcement?
Thanks

One work around for now would be to hit nvda plus s and type. If not, type it in note pad and then past, at least for now Take care all. -- Sarah Alawami, owner of TFFP. . Hi all. You can also use the add-on Word Count. https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/wordCount.en.html Regards.

No. Just turn off speech, NVDA key s, type, then turn it on again. Press twice to turn it back on, once to turn it off.

Could this be in any way related to whether you have the "dynamic content" setting on?
NVDA+N,P,S, then the "Object Presentation" pane, checkbox for Report dynamic content changes? (Default is ON/checked) -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn

To add to Brian's message you can also press the NVDA key (usually
the insert key) along with the number 5 (on the row of numbers and
not on the numeric keypad) as a shortcut key to toggle dynamic
content changes on or off.

David,
Thanks for that, as I had not reviewed recent changes in the Commands Quick Reference, and would never have found this unless I had been specifically looking for something about Dynamic Content. It also appears there is a keyboard shortcut for opening settings directly to the object presentation pane, NVDA+CTRL+O There's always something "sneaking in" as new features appear! -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn

Changed the dynamic content setting to off and it made no
difference.

I think this sort of announcement is triggered by ARIA alerts and I’m not aware of a way to stop NVDA reading those as a matter of course. Some websites really abuse alerts, perhaps with developers not understanding the purpose of the feature.
I’d love an addon that allowed you to mark specific web-page elements to alert or not as the user wanted on-the-fly, there are probably more sites who don’t use ARIA at all than overuse it, but both cases are frustrating. S.

NVDA doesn't have a turn off aria alerts setting. it should. If a site is programmed incorrectly, aria speecch can be very disruptive.

I may create a ticket. I'm a bit surprised that it has never been brought up. Maybe it doesn't affect that many users or those it affects who might submit one don't know what the problem is and so don't create a ticket.

And one that I hope, over time, with encouragement from the membership here, and leading by example, will change. I don't want to see the folks at NVAccess be flooded with repeat bug reports or feature requests, so not only does careful thought need to go into why you believe you have a bug and how you need to report it, or how to carefully word a feature request, but also one must search first to see if it doesn't already exist, in which case you'd just add a comment to the existing one. Bug reports are relatively rare, and you have to make sure you have the steps down such that the developers can reproduce the issue before filing one. But NVDA users are blessed by the fact that they do have a direct line to the developers via GitHub. That is an unbelievably valuable, and rare, asset and communication channel. It shouldn't be used frivolously (for lack of a better way of putting it right now) but nor should it be avoided when you can be giving valuable feedback not only for yourself but for the user community as a whole. I only wish such existed for most of the software I've ever used, but it doesn't. Microsoft has stepped somewhat closer with the Feedback Hub, but even that's at several levels of removal from the actual development teams. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn
