Clipspeak Interfering with Modifier Keys After Selecting Material from Clipboard to Copy

Abbie Taylor

I'm not seeing a way to contact this add-on's developer directly. So, I'm posting this here.

I've had this issue with Clipspeak before and disabled it. After updates to this add-on came out, I tried it again but am having the same issue. I've finally established a pattern.

When I press Control plus V to paste material, things work as they should. But after I paste a specific item from the clipboard by pressing Windows plus V and navigating to the item and pressing the spacebar, although the item is copied, my modifier keys either don't function, have different functions, or function when not necessary.

Here are some examples. In Chrome, I can't toggle between Forms and Browse mode with Space plus Modifier. In Word, when I press Home to navigate to the beginning of a line, I'm taken to the top of the document. In Thunderbird, when I press Modifier plus Down or Up Arrow to read all or the current line, my speech rate decreases or increases. I often have to restart NVDA in order for everything to work properly.

I'm running Windows 10 Version 21 H 2 with NVDA Version 22.4. I really like the feedback I get from Clipspeak when doing anything with the clipboard. So, I've tried disabling the add-on when I want to select items from the clipboard to copy and enabling it when I'm done. But that was getting to be a pain. So, I'm leaving it disabled for now. Since I've established a pattern, I hope this issue can be duplicated and resolved.

The control key is getting stuck on.  Try pressing the right and left control key quickly perhaps ten or fifteen times, then see if it is no longer stuck.  Or it may just be easier to unload and run NVDA again.

I have no idea if this is a general problem or one few people experience but whatever the case, the result is as I described, that the control key is stuck on.

Could this possibly have any tie-in to Clipboard History, which was introduced mid-stream of Windows 10?

I'd at least look at the Clipboard Settings and check to see if the behaviors are any different if Clipboard History is on versus off.  I believe it's off by default, but I know I've turned it on.

Hello!

I am the maintainer of this add-on... and my e-mail is rui.fontes@....

I cannot accept the fact that the supplement is the only culprit.

And the reason is my inability to reproduce 100% of times your steps...

Surelly it happens some times but not always...

My signature was copied with Windows+v and no key was stuck...

Hi,

Possible culprit: Control key getting stuck when pasting data via clipboard history. After selecting an item to be pasted, Windows presses Control+V on its own. This may or may not be the case in Windows 11 as you can press Enter from Windows 11 clipboard history to paste items (the overall UI of clipboard history has changed significantly between Windows 10 and 11).

Cheers,

Joseph

One way to test a possible cause is to disable all other add-ons, then see if the problem occurs when just using this one add-on.  If it doesn't occur, then it is a combination of the add-on and one or more others.

When something like this happens to me where it appears as though my control key was being held down I just press the right control key once or twice followed by doing the same with my left control key. Hopefully, that will help if that’s what is happening with this user.

Well, yesterday, I enabled Cliipspeak again and tried a suggestion others made to press the right then left control keys twice after pasting material from clipboard history. So far, this seems to have resolved the issue. So, Robert, you might try enabling the add-on again and pressing first your right then your left control key twice and see if you're then able to copy something. I hope that helps.

And would have begun working if you disabled the Clipboard command announcement feature in NVDAExtensionGlobalPlugin.

When you have any two programs (and add-ons are programs) competing to control the same thing, problems ensue, always.  This is why you never put two antivirus or security suite programs on the same computer at the same time.  They use similar techniques, look at the same things, and each thinks the other is a threat, and they fight each other to the death.

It is imperative when using add-ons that you do not use any two that are attempting to control the same thing at the same time, or to turn off the component of one of them that is attempting to control the same thing as another (when that option exists).  You will have conflicts otherwise that screw up functionality.

Hi,

I think part of the confusion could stem from add-on documentation, specifically regarding features NVDA Extension add-on supports and can be toggled (clipboard key handling being one of them); I myself do not write code until I think about messages and documentation (I think that could be why folks consider my add-on docs and messages to be superb because I take developer to user communication (and back) seriously; I wish we the members of the add-ons community can talk more about this in the future, but since folks are busying adjusting to add-on store at the moment...). I have some philosophical issues with NVDA Extension add-on, but for what it does, it should meet needs of users.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I agree, but do keep in mind he does not have English as a first language, at least that I’m aware of. It even says right there that Google Translate had translated it for him. I wonder how ChatGPT would actually handle it and retranslate those docs, now that I think about it, as I’ve heard very good translation results with it. I will say that some of the way it was translated did somewhat confuse me, but I did start understanding it over time.

Disclaimer/warning: If I ever came out rude or harsh due to mistranslations, please know I do apologize in advance and that I did not intend to cause any harm or hurt feelings. I was just giving a point/my own experience with this add-on.

As for ClipSpeak, in 10 this is not reproduceable that I know of, but I can try it later on. I’ll also try in 11 and see if I can repro there.

Thanks and cheers,

Chris
