first espeak ng variant made with chat-gpt AI

Josh Kennedy

Not sure who would be interested in this, but chat-gpt has created a new and original espeak variant... I gave it the following prompts:

note: you may have to press shift enter to insert new lines in multiline edit field if needed.

prompt 1. gather all information about espeak-ng and nv speech player for NVDA, then read the following voice variant file, stop, and wait for further instructions.

variant file contents go here.

after it finnishes its first response, time for prompt 2.

prompt 2. Now based on the contents of the above variant file, create a new original voice variant, include klatt 6, and make it a big improvement which sounds much better than the original glen (insert variant name here), variant.

After prompt2 is completed and you get its output, you paste it into a new variant file, and do some hand editing to remove extra comments, bad formatting and punctuation and any needed info for the variant to work. so yes some human intervention is needed at the end, but it works! chat-gpt can make espeak ng voice variants!
It made me a variant called aurora.

How can I get a copy of the file to use in nvda for speech?

Wow, that's cool. Where do I get the variant file though?

it sounds kind of like the nerd voice from the old soft-voice tts engine from pw webspeak in the mid 1990s.

Sam Bushman

Hi Josh,

I unzip the file and see tons of voices.

Can you please tell me which one it is?

Thanks,

Sam

Okay, so I don't get how to get this to work. It looks like there are
several new voices, but none of them have file extensions. As a
result, my computer asks me what program I want to open the files with
and it gives me all the text editors. How do I get this to a place
where NVDA can use it?

You need to copy those files to this path and then restart NVDA.

C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\synthDrivers\espeak-ng-data\voices\!v

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Sam

Hi of these in the list, I think the one you mention is not doing it for me in UK English. There are a lot in the list you sent that sound better to me. I do wish though that people would steer clear of calling them names that exist in other sysnths, Daniel etc, are not the Daniel, otherwise known as John Briggs.
I myself lean toward those with deeper voices. I'm not sure why, but a lot of the Espeak voices sound slightly northern UK, similar to how Harold Wilson used to speak.
If Espeak had a realistic US accent many people would like that.
Nonetheless an interesting experiment, but as always, the best variant is in the brain of the beholder, and it also seems that this goes for whatever you fed Chat GPT with in the first place as a suggestion.
It has no perception of what is right, after all.

I did it in a portable version as then the v folder is in the syynths section, down about two levels. I did many years ago make a batch file to do the installation, but cannot find it just now.

variants do not have file extensions. that is one of the rules when making variants, no file extensions at all. you put the voice variants in the folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\synthDrivers\espeak-ng-data\voices\!v

there is a bug with espeak ng where if you have 230 or more variants, espeak languages start disappearing and the tts engine  becomes unstable. so before you paste in those new variants, do a control a, delete, hit the continue button if it appears, and then put the new variants into the empty folder, and then restart NVDA and the new variants will work.

Hi,

If this isn't an April Fool's joke, I'd love to hear an audio sample. Do you have a link?

Kind regards

I agree with you about the realistic U.S. accent. I was able to look
at some of the variant files, so I'll try and develop my own and run
it in the portable copy I just created when I have time. I have some
stuff I have to do before I start school again on Monday, so probably
won't get around to doing this anytime soon. The portable copy was a
great suggestion, and accelerated when I was going to do that anyway,
as I am going to need it to help a friend out tomorrow.
