how to silence the "spelling error" announcement while reading in thunderbird

Mary Otten

Another difference that has happened since my reinstallation of Windows is that, when I am reading a message, or arrowing in one or whenever I encounter something that T-bird thinks is a spelling error, NVDA announces that fact. This is not the same as the spell check that can happen when you hit send and before the message is actually sent. In this case, there are words that are not actual errors, such as the word pc and many many others. I do NOT wish to hear "spelling error" in these instances, as it is distracting. Can this announcement be suppressed?

I'll answer in two parts.  first, I'll tell you ow not to hear this and then, I'll explain why you might want to.

You can stop hearing this by changing an NVDA setting.
Open the document formatting dialog with the command NVDA key, control, d.
Tab to spelling errors.  This is a check box.
Uncheck it with the space bar.
Press enter and the dialog will close.  The setting will be changed.

Here is why you might not want to change it.

You may not want to use the feature, but I find it much more efficient to have spelling errors flagged as I write and correcting them at the time or, when I read a message before sending it.  I read messages before I send them to guard against mistakes in what I have written or to look for possible lack of clarity that I might want to remove.

Sometimes, I correct spelling errors when a word is flagged, sometimes, when I am rereading a message.  NVDA makes a soft buzzing sound when a word is flagged.
If a word is flagged and you are on it, opening the context menu presents suggestions.  Press enter on the one you want.  This is often faster than manually correcting the error.

You can add flagged words to the dictionary in the context menu.  I have done so for some words or acronyms, such as NVDA.

Here is another thought.  Generally, when writing in edit fields on web sites where you enter information such as questions or comments, flagging of misspelled words is given.  If you have this feature off in NVDA, you won't hear misspelled words flagged.  Even if you generally have the feature off, you might want to turn it on while working in such edit fields.  You will look more credible if such errors aren't sent to whomever sees the material.

Thanks, Gene. Your suggestion did the trick. I do recognize the importance of correct spelling, but I also type with all voice silenced. I find it very very distracting to hear what I am typing as I type. So I do have to rely on spell check, which use to come up when I finished a message and hit send, but now it isn't, for whatever reason, so I have to read through and fix mistakes that I find based on the speech. that's not perfect, but listening to what I type as I type is just not happening. <smile>

You can run the spell checker by pressing f7 when you want to run it.  Now, you know both ways of checking messages.
