IBM TTS not compatible with latest release
Chad Fenton
I noticed the IBM TTS voice synthesizer add-on is not compatible with the latest release. Hopefully that will be corrected as well.

Chad

The IBM TTS Driver add-on is definitely compatible with NVDA 2023.1, at least the version resident on the NVDA Add-Ons Directory.

My bad. The driver updater just caught it and it’s downloaded and working perfectly.

Correct--IBM TTS doesn't work and
editing manifest.ini doesn't fix the problem. The add on needs to
be fixed by the author of this add on.

I just tried installing the latest
driver. It did appear to install with no errors, but when I
restarted NVDA, it switched to One Core voices and when I look at
the list of installed synths, IBM TTS is just no longer there!
What's going on here? If you wish, would probably to reply to me
directly off list.

Uninstall the driver you installed, and go to the following link:
https://blindhelp.net/software/ibmtts
Be sure you install the driver with libraries included. The first file is just the driver. It should work then.

Hi Roger,
the driver is there but the synthesizer files get deleted, since sharing that is, strictly speaking, illegal. You will need to find a source that has the voices and copy that into the addon. If you bought the voices, just wait for an updated release. Any more hints on this, just drop me a line. Nermin |

Well, I must have the voices around here somewhere as it used to work until I installed that add on which you say is just driver only. Where are the voices stored and exactly what files do I need to copy in to get it going again. I have several working copies of NVDA as portable versions and IBM TTS works just fine on these so the voices are obviously in there. I checked through all the files and folders and I find nothing called voices at all.

Well, someone on the list sent me a link to get an add on packaged with voices and it is now working. However, I still would like to know what files I need to copy to make this work if I just have the driver add on as this problem seems to come around about once a year.

Hi. I can't find the add-on under discussion on the Community add-ons website, which I accessed through the "Get add-ons" button in "Manage add-ons". I want to get it, but I think I might be looking in the wrong place. I have a SAPI 4 version that came bundled with an earlier version of OpenBook, but I don't know if it will be compatible with the new version of NVDA. It's listed in the "Select Synthesizer" dialog as "SAPI 4", and it's the only SAPI 4 synthesizer I have. I don't want to do anything illegal.

I don't know if it is technically illegal but I think if IBM had
been worried about it, they would have restricted the synthesizer to
only work with the program it was used in decades ago. It wasn't
restricted in Home Page reader, nor in Openbook, nor in Window-eyes,
when Window-eyes used the synthesizer.

And yes, since it is a SAPI voice, if it works in one version of NVDA, it will work in another. Gene On 3/27/2023 2:07 PM, Louise Pfau

I thought we were forbidden to mention IBM TTS because someone thinks it's not legal. However, the creator and distributor say that it is legal. I'm just a bit confused.

I got it to work, just modify the manifest file for the nvda-add-on file. and, it is legal, but it is not my contest. That version of the Eloquence was out long before jfw had

I'mThere is nothing illegal about the IBM TTS add-on(s). What is of questionable status, are the voices themselves. That is not so much a legal issue, as it is a potential (if incredibly unlikely) intellectual property law suit issue. In order to mitigate risk--mainly to ourselves from groups.io getting paranoid--we shouldn't provide links to places where you might obtain the voices. But the add-on itself is and was open source, and is original work. Here is what I personally consider the definitive post on the subject: https://nvda-addons.groups.io/g/nvda-addons/message/20052 Luke |

I will also add to this topic that the previously noted website, blindhelp.net, should really not be discussed in public, on-group, either.
They had already been banned from Groups.io because they traffic in hacked and cracked software, and brazenly so. Because doing so violates Groups.io policy, and they're still doing this, reference to their website should not be made in public on the group. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit It is much easier to be critical than to be correct. ~ Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-1881 |
