Is it true: no Microsoft Office stand-alone editions anymore after 2021?

Daniel McGee

Dear listers

For those in the know.

Will there not be any further editions of: Microsoft Office products in stand-alone form after the 2021 version?
For my office requirements. I don't need or want supposedly the benefits of: Office 365.

If such is the case, then could someone recommend any good stand-alone word processors which work with nvda and have spell checking functionality built in?

Many thanks

Daniel

Since I don't know how you intend to use a word processor, I don't know if this suggestion will meet your needs.  JARTE is a free word processor that has a spell checker.  It is no longer being developed and it can't create files in the docx format.  If that doesn't matter, you may find it satisfactory.

Libre Office Writer, for one.

But until or unless Office 2021 does not meet your needs, you can keep using it for as long as you like.  I used Office 2010 past the point where it was out of official support before directly updating to Office 2016.  I doubt that when Office 2016 goes out of support in 2025 that I'll jump to M365 (which, if you go in on M365 Family with up to 5 other friends, is an absolute bargain, for years, when compared to what Microsoft charges for the standalone version even of Office Home and Student).

The only Office program I would not use after it's out of support is Outlook, as its contact with cyberspace is too extensive and too constant to have without ongoing security updates.  For things like Word or Excel, not so much.

Well, I have a need for Access, which had even more costs. It is debatable whether an Office XP version will be more expensive to update to the newer versions of access, than would be a complete rewrite, as the original has a lot of visual basic scripts in it though.

Yes agree about Outlook. As I have said before, it is a great pity Microsoft did not keep up development of Outlook Express instead of re inventing things like Live mail and mail and news with various access issues, then that awful Windows mail.
It is important for me to see emails off line, and Outlook the way its going is becoming just a web page.

Er, no.  And this displays a complete ignorance of Outlook as a standalone email client, which it fully remains and will continue to remain.  It's not Outlook.com.

Hi,

Keyword is "project monarch". The standalone Outlook will remain but the interface wil be changing.

Cheers,

Hi,

I can only hope and pray that "Project Monarch" will replace the standard Windows apps, but never replace the "real" (native) Outlook. I hate these web apps!

Sorry I just had to say that.

Kind regards

Color me surprised - not!  It's a fact of being in the world of computing that things change, constantly, and with a frequency that outstrips virtually all other areas of life.

That's why I get so frustrated with people who pine for things like Outlook Express, Windows XP or 7, or whatever that is a part of the past.  There's a difference between acknowledging that one preferred them and acting like it's some huge injustice that they were discontinued.  Everything, and I do mean everything, ends up being discontinued if you look beyond the product name.  Outlook today is quite a bit different to the Outlook I was using in the 1980s and early 1990s, but it's still called Outlook.

If you're not willing to go with the flow in the world of computing you will end up being crashed against the rocks and drowning.  You just cannot stop the march of change (I won't say progress, because some change isn't).  We get what we get from the various makers and have to deal with it.  Anything else is a huge waste of time and energy.

And I would love to know why, truly, but not here, but on the Chat Subgroup.

To me, since virtually every blind and sighted user I know knows how to use a web browser, web apps which follow all the usual web principles have been a boon, not a disaster.  You have to learn much less to use them, but make no mistake, you do have to learn things specific to them, just like old-fashioned standalone application programs.

I am not going to start a topic on the Chat Subgroup myself.  But if someone else wants to, I'll be following it.  Discussion of web apps in general (or even application programs in general) has nothing to do specifically with NVDA.

Three great articles from Office Watch.  I've cited the first one in the past because I think Microsoft has been insane to use the branding "Outlook" for the disparate things it's attached it to:

Too many Microsoft Outlooks – we explain them all
Project Monarch or One Outlook to rule them all
First look at the new Microsoft Outlook – New Outlook

You're not the only one.  Sure, the web has it's place, but when I run a program, I expect it to be on my machine, and store it's data there (unless I tell it otherwise).  These web apps that store everything on the cloud is definitely the future, but it's been proven time ant time again, that hackers have way more value now when they break into one of those servers.  Used to be they'd get company records, with some personal information in them.  Now, not only do they get the personal information they used to, but now they get all the data you've ever saved with that app too.

I am not a fan.

I try my level best not to use web apps, and when it is necessary, I do the minimum to ensure they can't store more info then they need to accomplish their given tasks, and that's it. Nothing extra anywhere.  If they ask for more information than they need, I bow out, and stop using them.  I realize this isn't a sustainable approach, but until I can't find or write apps to do what I want locally, I'll be sticking with that strategy for as long as it's feasible.

Companies have enough of my personal information, they don't need my daily routines too.

Well, by that metric, Windows 10 and 11 wouldn't fill the bill by default, since they'll use OneDrive for the "standard user libraries" by default.

And I will ask, again, that this conversation be taken to the Chat Subgroup.  It's not about NVDA, and Ali has kindly done as I asked and started a dedicated topic for discussing web apps and opinions about same there.

I will lock this topic if it becomes necessary, but I'm hoping it won't be necessary.
