NVDA 2020.3 beta 1 is now available
Quentin Christensen
Beta1 of NVDA 2020.3 is now available for download and testing. For anyone who is interested in trying out what the next version of NVDA has to offer before it is officially released, we welcome you to download the beta and provide feedback. NVDA 2020.3 includes several large improvements to stability and performance, particularly in Microsoft Office applications. There are new settings to toggle touchscreen support and graphics reporting. The existence of marked (highlighted) content can be reported in browsers, and there are new German braille tables. This beta will prompt to update to future 2020.3 betas, release candidates and the final 2020.3 once it is released. Visit https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2020-3beta1/ for more information and to download the new beta.

I recently had to create a new user account on my PC in order to correct a problem which I won't go into in this message as the problem had nothing at all to do with NVDA. Once I did this I noticed snappier responsiveness when moving the cursor around in a Microsoft Word document. With the beta of 2020.3 with UIA support enabled I am noticing that responsiveness in Word 365 is almost as good as it is in Jarte. This has really pleased me and has made me more excited and willing to use NVDA, particularly with Word.

Hi. If I download the beta, will it overwrite my existing copy of NVDA 2020.2?

Hi. If I download the beta, will it overwrite my existing copy of NVDA 2020.2?If you download the beta: no. If you install the beta: yes. You can download and run the installation file for the beta. At that point you will have three options: install, create portable, or continue running. If you install, it will upgrade your installed copy to the beta. If you create a portable, it will make a portable copy that you can run as an alternative to your installed version, and which is entirely self-contained and won't mess with your installed copy. Lastly, you can "continue running", which will just keep running the copy of NVDA used in the installer, which is the beta. You won't be able to save settings or gestures in that one, but it will give you a one-time style test of the beta. Your best bet is to create a portable and use that to play with and test the beta. Hi. What happens to the portable copy of the beta when my current version updates to the stable version of NVDA?
Thanks, Louise

Hi, It’ll be left as is – running the beta unless you start the portable copy and choose to update to 2020.3 (final release). Cheers, Joseph

As a side question, and this applies beyond the beta, but just came up when I was installing it.
When you already have an existing installed version of NVDA running, the installer tells you that it will update the existing installation (or something similar). What I'm wondering is whether this actually means that some of the existing code is retained and added to? A lot of installers, once they detect an existing installed version, will uninstall that version and then install the latest, and tell you so. What is the NVDA installer actually doing in the case of an update to an existing installed version? -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings unintentionally. ~ Oscar Wilde

Hi, It will override (replace) existing installation if file names are the same. Cheers, Joseph
