NVDA and MuseScore

J.G

Hello,

is here anyone, who use MuseScore with NVDA?
I would like to write some songs and review/check scores of songs, which my choir is singing.
I need advice how to learn this program, how to setting up it that it will be most accessible, how to navigate etc.
if I'm on the wrong way, correct recommendations will be also appretiated.

thanks.

regards
Jožef

Hello,

For Musescore 4, you can refer to the accessibility topic at the link below:

Yes, I am a current MuseScore 4 user with NVDA.  If you want to contact me off list with questions, I'm happy to help, though I do encounter some issues with the program which I have reported.  Still and all, it's quite good from an accessibility with NVDA standpoint.  One of the main educators regularly uses NVDA as part of his demonstrations and is aware of the effects of screen reader usage.

Hello,

thanks to all of you for your help. first of all which version of MuseScore is most accessible and you recommend? is it 4.x or should I use 3.6.2?
When I've played with 3.6.2 (portable edition), and latest stable NVDA, which was available at the time (now 2022.4) some commands disappeared from menu when app was used for a few minutes. I also had other problems with dialogs, comboboxes and other graphical elements. I know, it uses Qt GUI, which is not totally friendly with NVDA.
But due to I'm a beginner in MuseScore world I might have missed something.

thanks.

I think 4.02 is better.  They redesigned the entire UX, and it is easier to navigate between parts of the interface than it was.  Parts of the mixer that weren't accessible before are now.
The big reason to update is the inbuilt instruments.  The installation is kind of fiddly, but you can do it with NVDA, if you abandon most preconceptions about what an installation dialogue should look like.

Hello,

uf many differences between Musescore 3 and 4...
I watched accessibility videos linked from Handbook on YT and tried to replay it, but when I've tried to start a new score, I could not go to next steps. str:

-started MuseScore 4
- first set of radiobuttons (selected Home)
- second set of radiobuttons (selected scores)
- pressd new score button
and on this "page", whatever I tried to select, I could not see button Ok or something like that. there is only "Cancel" button.
So, here I'm and I feel totally stupid.
What has been done wrong?
Why ins+up and other shortcuts don't work?
what about object navigation...

Thanks for your help.

regards
Jožef

Hi,

After accessing the Cancel button, you can access other options by using the Right and Left arrow keys.

Don't feel bad about not knowing this; it's counterintuitive and kind of buried in the accessibility videos; and not present at all in any written documentation I can remember.
This way of doing things happens on all the new score screens.  To move on to the next step, tab to the cancel button and use your arrow keys to find the previous and next buttons.

Hello,

thanks for your help, I've just (almost) finished my first score. I see that text of song should be written nearby all voyces. is there an option to copy text to other voyces or should I write by hand to all voyces seperately?

thanks.

regards
Jožef

Christopher Bartlett

You can copy from one voice to another, though I'm going to be careful here and say that "voice" is a term that has a specific meaning in MuseScore.  Each staff has up to four independent voices on it, useful for writing split parts with independent motion.  (Otherwise, you could just use the chord writing facility.)  I'm assuming you mean parts here.
Select what you want to copy with ctrl-shift-right and left to select measures, or shift-right/left to select individual notes.  You can use shift-up/down to select parts on multiple staves.  Ctrl-c copies, ctrl-x cuts and ctrl-v pastes as usual.
