I recently noticed this behavior and it was maddening as I knew it hadn’t occurred with earlier versions of NVDA.
First, here’s what I’m using and the symptoms. This occurs with NVDA 2022.3 as well as with 2022.4 Beta 2. I’m using Microsoft Teams version 1.5.00.28567, Windows 10 Enterprise, version 21 H2.
This issue occurs when I’m in a public Teams channel and while I’m reading a reply to a message with browse mode disabled. I must emphasize that the behavior I’m about to describe only occurs with a reply to a message and not with the original
message that started the thread.
In this example, suppose I send a message to a channel and John Smith sends out a reply. When I move to John Smith’s reply, NVDA should read it as “reply from John Smith” followed by the text of the reply. Lately, instead of hearing the
expected text NVDA says “reply from” and then the rest of the message gets cut off and it then says “menu.” This behavior is very consistent.
I had a feeling that the culprit was one of the Advanced Settings options. Sure enough it’s connected to the “Attempt to cancel speech for expired focus events” setting. Once I disabled that setting NVDA reads the replies properly.
I’m wondering if this is a bug with NVDA or specifically with Teams? If it’s likely something that needs to be dealt with in Teams and if NVDA is just doing what it’s being told to do I can report it to the Microsoft Enterprise Disability
Answer Desk. If it’s an NVDA issue I’m happy to report it in their Github. Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

Hi David
I do not know the root cause of the issue. Anyway, since changing the value of an NVDA option resolves the issue, it's worth it opening an issue in NVDA's GitHub, so that the root cause can be investigated.

Hello David and all,
I encounter the same problems as you since a recent update of Teams. I use Windows 11. I thought it would be caused by the graphical device of my old computer. But I just changed my
computer and I have the same problem.
It happens for replies in a conversation when forms mode is on.
Disabling “Attempt to cancel speech for expired focus events” in advanced NVDA settings seems to solve the issue.
I tested with another well-known screen reader and I don’t have the issue.
So I don’t know if we have to create an issue on NVDA Github or should send this feedback to Microsoft.

Hi Sylvie and David
You can test with Narrator to see if the issu also occurs with this screen reader. If yes, you can directly report the issue to Microsoft. If no, you should open a ticket against NVDA so that the root cause of the issue be investigated. At the end, if Microsoft is culprit, NVAccess will provide more precise information to technically describe the issue for Microsoft.

I would personally do both. In case it is both an nvda issue and or a Microsoft issue. That’s just my thinking, report to as many devs as you can with about 2 pages of bug report if you can Good luck.

Hello Cyrille and all,
I just tested with Narrator and it works fine like with the other well known commercial screen reader.
So I suspect the problem relies in NVDA communicating with Microsoft Teams.
With the checkbox unchecked, I now can hear the replies announced by the speech synthesizer but I still have “menu” displayed in Braille. So if I do need to access to the chat without
speech I have no access to the replies in Braille.

Hello,
It is the checkbox mentioned by David in his first message, in NVDA advanced settings, called
“Attempt to cancel speech for expired focus events”
Continuing my tests, since this checkbox is unchecked and maybe since an update from Microsoft Teams, I can hear the replies pronounced by the speech synthesizer but in Braille I still
can read “menu”.
I am not sure it is an issue only with NVDA because I happened to use Teams with VoiceOver on a Mac and I had also the word menu displayed for a short moment.

Hello all,
Since the update to NVDA 2022.4, it seems that the problem I had encountered with reading replies in a Microsoft Teams channel is gone.
I can read replies with voice and Braille.
I had a look at advanced settings and the setting “Attempt to cancel speech for expired focus events”, that I disabled after David’s email, is set to yes again, and it still works fine.
Furthermore, reading email notifications from teams was difficult with NVDA. It did not provide the content of the conversation text in opposite to other screen readers. Now, the mail
content is rendered properly with NVDA 2022.4 and my Outlook 365 version.
I hope that other people of this list who encountered the problems with Microsoft Teams described below have access to mails and conversations with this new NVDA release.
Thanks to NV Access who could correct the issue.
Best and happy new year to all the NVDA community.

This issue occurs when I’m in a public Teams channel and while I’m reading a reply to a message with browse mode disabled. I must emphasize that the behavior I’m about to describe only occurs
with a reply to a message and not with the original message that started the thread.
In this example, suppose I send a message to a channel and John Smith sends out a reply. When I move to John Smith’s reply, NVDA should read it as “reply from John Smith” followed by the text
of the reply. Lately, instead of hearing the expected text NVDA says “reply from” and then the rest of the message gets cut off and it then says “menu.” This behavior is very consistent.
I had a feeling that the culprit was one of the Advanced Settings options. Sure enough it’s connected to the “Attempt to cancel speech for expired focus events” setting. Once I disabled that
setting NVDA reads the replies properly.
I’m wondering if this is a bug with NVDA or specifically with Teams? If it’s likely something that needs to be dealt with in Teams and if NVDA is just doing what it’s being told to do I can
report it to the Microsoft Enterprise Disability Answer Desk. If it’s an NVDA issue I’m happy to report it in their Github. Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.
