Possible bug with excel and NVDA, can anyone replicate?

Mobeen Iqbal

Hello Everyone.

I think I have found a bug with NVDA and excel but I just want to make sure it is actually a bug before I report it. I'm running the latest version of NVDA and excel. When I password protect a workbook using alt F, followed by I, followed by P, then choose the encrypt with password option, NVDA reports the password as I type it as opposed to asterisks. When I reopen the workbook, the password is read out as I type. This issue does not occur with word 365. I have not tested with powerpoint or other apps yet. Has anyone else experienced this?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

What version of office are you actually running? Latest could be 2018, 2016 or 2021. I think I skipped a version.

It doesn't happen for me using Excel 2016 and NVDA 2022.3.3.   In fact, when I'm typing that password for encryption I don't even get character-by-character feedback in the form of asterisk or star.

Do you, by any chance, have the Report Passwords add-on, and might it be active when running Excel, but not Word?

Hi Brian.

Thanks for checking. I have actually restarted NVDA with all of my add-ons disabled and it's still happening. I don't recall this being an issue with earlier office versions, it just seems to have happened recently. I wonder if it's specific to office 365?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

Hi,

Which version of Office do you have? Please do tell us this before going any further. To find out, from Excel, press NVDA+F1 to display developer info and let us know what is shown in product version field.

P.S. In 2023, let us move away from saying that we have latest of everything, as not everyone is on latest of everything. Please don't take the way I phrased my question above as a harsh thing this year - it's something I and other folks who are providing technical support need and have been emphasizing for years.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph.

My apologies. I am running NVDA version 2023.3.3 and office 16.0.15831.20208. Is there perhaps a setting which shows passwords in excel that I could have enabled inadvertently if no one else can replicate this issue?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

And asking for it, when it is not provided, cannot be considered harsh.  One MUST have accurate information about "the ecosystem as a whole" for any given technical question.  Ideally, even the version of Windows would be provided, but in this case having the NVDA and Excel (Office) version numbers would have been the ideal starting point.

Please, people, get your version numbers in a collection in a plain text file and update them when your software updates.  That way you have them conveniently to hand to include in tech support requests no matter where you're making those requests.

I sent out an admin notice at the beginning of December on just this, and perhaps posting a direct link to it again will have the effect of folks following this convention from today, forward:  To those asking questions: Please give detailed information on your computing environment

I use Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2211 Build 16.0.15831.20098) 64-bit you can apply that version to excel as well.

Take care.1/1/2023

Just to confirm it doesn’t happen here either with the latest Office 365 subscription.

For what it's worth (not much, apparently, since this has been open since 2015), you can update the Excel 2013/2016 NVDA bug report on this same thing, at:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/5221

When I reopen the workbook, the password is read out as I type.
That, I can definitely replicate reliably. And it seems agnostic of UIA settings.

I have just posted a bug on it. Please add your experience to this bug report, as your Office version and NVDA version are likely different than mine (Office 2019 (16.0.15831.20208), NVDA alpha-27459).

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/14529

I won't poste a bug on the first part of this, as I can't yet replicate it reliably, and the logging of the only attempt I made where it did happen, was lost.

Also, if you do comment on the bug I posted, please enter your correct NVDA version. In this thread you said it was 2023.3.3, which is a version that has not yet been created.

Hi.

Thanks for confirming. My apologies regarding the NVDA version. I meant to type 2022.3.3. I will post my experiences on GitHub shortly.

Very best wishes,

Mo.

Here I have a similar problem.

While creating the password, it work normally. However, any time I come back to reopen the document, excel will readout the password in plain text.

and yes, I’m not having that issue with narrator.
