Questions Regarding The Donation Form on Nvaccess.org

David Goldfield

Hi. As I wanted to upgrade my copy of NVDA from the release candidate to the final 2020.4 release I decided to download the executable file from the Web site so that I could access it offline in the event that I should need to do a reinstall. I also decided that I wanted to make a donation to NV Access while doing so and I will say that I was successful in doing so.

On the donation form is a series of radio buttons for specific amounts along with one to specify a custom amount, which I’m fine with. The one thing that confused me is that there appears to be two separate groups of radio buttons in one list. The first group contains several amounts along with an “other” choice. Following that are more radio buttons in the same list, with another radio button labeled “other.” I gather that the first group of radio buttons are for one-time donations and the second group is for monthly donations but please correct me if I’m misinterpreting what I’m hearing.

The problem is that there is no explanatory text to differentiate these two seemingly separate groups. I kind of figured this out when for the second group Paypal indicated that I would be making regular donations to NV Access but the first group seemed like a one-time donation. If this is the case I’d like to make a suggestion that these be separated into two separate lists with explanatory text clearly indicating the purpose of each list: one time donations vs monthly donations.

Again, if I’m not interpreting this form correctly by all means please do let me know. I’m only pointing this out because those of us who are able to do so are quite happy to donate to NV Access due to how important NVDA is to so many people.

OK … this admission is going to cause me no end of grief and embarrassment but I always do try to be as honest and transparent as I can. When I was on the donation page after selecting the Download option I was using a screen reader which was not NVDA. When I accessed the page using NVDA the labels for the two sets of radio buttons were clearly being rendered. I don’t know if this is an issue in how the actual page is constructed or a bug with that other screen reader. If it’s the latter I sincerely apologize as it would definitely not be an issue with NVDA.

Hi David,

No problem at all, and thanks for the clarification, it will help prevent others from investigating what you've already solved.  I was going to say I just tested this with NVDA myself and it clearly reported each radio button group as I moved between them, both in focus and browse modes.

I didn't think there was anything too odd about the form that another screenreader should have trouble with.... But I'm glad it works with NVDA at least - that's the main thing I can help influence and control!

All the best, and thank you for your generous donation, we very much appreciate it!

Quentin.

Quentin,

I am trying to make a donation. The form requires our country of origin and Ireland is not in the list. Should I take it that Irish colleagues are not expected to make a donation?

I cannot proceed by identifying myself as being from some other country!

Have you any advice to offer?

All the best,

Cearbhall

David, you faithless so-and-so!!  Your punishment awaits, and who knows when it will come?!

[Wait, I think it already did.]

Cearbhall,

Just letting you know that I'm going to merge your question in with the other topic (Questions Regarding the Donation Form on NVAccess.org) about the donation page that's already running from today.  These come up again and again, most often when new releases come out, and I try to keep "a [single] donations page topic" per release cycle where I can.

I just donated for the latest 2004 version. All went well, and I got a message back from PayPal saying I had made the donation. Only thing is I didn't receive any message from NV Access itself. I used to get at least one short thank you message. I don't know if these are automated and triggered by the receipt of the donation or just how they work. Just wondering.  Bottom line is they did receive my donation and the new NVDA is working fine so far.

Actually if he couldn't donate, I guess it's really OUR punishment!

Cearbhall, re Ireland not coming up on the list, I think you're on the PayPal site by then?  We don't ask for a country ourselves.

Roger, thank you very much for your generous donation, we do very much appreciate it!  If you got *a* receipt then the money should have gone through, but I can check if you need (let me know off-list) - also, if you need a more official looking NV Access receipt on letterhead for whatever reason, let me know and I can organise that too - most people don't need that, which is why we don't send it out by default.

Quentin.
